In-product Tableau Exchange -New in Tableau 2022.2
I start this video certain you can't get Exchange data sources in-product, and you get to watch me prove myself wrong.
- Accelerators are now available directly in Tableau Desktop via a 'More Accelerators' option, searchable by theme, category, language and connection type.
- Accelerators are essentially templates and starting points, so you edit the data source to swap in your own connection and update the dashboard for your environment.
- Exchange connectors can be installed in-product by clicking install and restarting Desktop, after which they appear in your installed connectors list.
- The in-product Exchange brings extensions, connectors and accelerators together in one place, so you rarely need to visit the Exchange website itself.
0:00As Tableau continues to build out the Table
0:01au exchange, more and more of that is making
0:04its way into the desktop editing experience
0:06.
0:06Tableau have now added Accelerators to the
0:08in-product experience. Let's get stuck in.
0:11So we're here in Tableau Desktop, I haven't
0:13opened anything at all and I've moved my
0:15face to the left hand side just to make it
0:17a little bit different.
0:18So when we open the product for the first
0:20time, normally along the bottom you're used
0:22to seeing these templates and these are now
0:24called Accelerators.
0:25I think the term Accelerators is just
0:27confusing, they should just call this
0:29templates, that's what they are.
0:31They're not accelerators, they need a lot
0:33of work, they are just templates, they're
0:35starting points.
0:35And I think that confuses a lot of people
0:37by calling them that because there's also
0:39another feature called Dashboard Acceler
0:41ation
0:42and it just makes the whole sort of e
0:44tymology of everything just weird. Anyway,
0:47these templates, which is what I'm going to
0:49call them,
0:49live along the bottom and now there's a new
0:52option over here that allows you to open up
0:55the ones on the exchange.
0:56So let's go ahead and do that. Let's go
0:59ahead and select more accelerators and just
1:01like we get for extensions,
1:03you now get this pop-up just for the
1:04accelerators and you can of course start
1:06searching these and start working with them
1:08.
1:08So this is just the accelerators that we've
1:11seen on the Tableau exchange and you can
1:13open them up straight from the product.
1:15You can search by theme, you can go through
1:17the categories, you can search by language,
1:19by connection type,
1:20maybe there's a specific data source that
1:22you want. At the moment, this is a fairly
1:24limited list,
1:25but I'm sure as they start to expand this
1:27over time, this will get a lot, lot better.
1:29One thing I'm going to search is an
1:30extension that I know one of my colleagues
1:32has built, so we'll just call this Tableau
1:35Server
1:36and we'll see if it can actually find it
1:38and you'll see that the search
1:39functionality isn't great.
1:41I think it's because I have this all
1:43categories not selected.
1:45So actually when we search it does actually
1:47find it correctly and you can see that this
1:48Tableau Server usage example is available.
1:51When we go ahead and click on it, what it
1:53will do is it'll open up another page,
1:55essentially the page that we've seen in the
1:57Tableau exchange and we can scroll down and
1:59it just opens up a nice little web browser.
2:01So you can get a little bit of a sense of
2:03what's going on here.
2:04Now, I think this might be because I'm
2:08using a beta version of the desktop.
2:10And so this image is not actually loading.
2:12It's unable to sort of go ahead and get the
2:14Tableau visualizations actually loading in
2:17this space for me to see that.
2:18I wish there was a thumbnail here at the
2:21top so I didn't have to scroll down to see
2:22the actual thing,
2:23but we get everything else from the web
2:25page and that's absolutely brilliant.
2:27When we go ahead and select open, what it
2:29actually does is it opens up the exact
2:31dashboard.
2:32Now in this case, because I had something
2:34open already, it's going to open it in
2:35another tab, I believe.
2:36So we're just going to wait a second.
2:37It's going to open this in another window
2:39to open it on another screen.
2:41So let's bring this in here.
2:42Wait for this to load.
2:43Once that's loaded up, you can of course
2:46get this.
2:46And so this is great.
2:47This is a really, really nice dashboard and
2:50you can then start working with this and
2:51all you need to do because it's a template.
2:53You can of course open up a new sheet.
2:57I can't do that because my face is in the
2:59way.
2:59So let's open up a new sheet and you can
3:01essentially just go in here,
3:03right click, edit the data source and start
3:05switching in your own connections and
3:06essentially get this to update to match
3:08your server.
3:09So this is the templates really, really
3:12working as they should do.
3:14Tab we can call them accelerators if they
3:15want to.
3:15But yeah, this is essentially templates.
3:18The in-product exchanges now start to sort
3:20of take more of a life.
3:21I still wish we could get TDX data sources
3:24in here.
3:25Technically, technically you can.
3:26So if I go to this little icon over here at
3:29the very, very top left hand side,
3:32you'll see the data sources here on the
3:33left hand side.
3:34If I go and connect to one, if I go and
3:37select more, you'll see I get this list and
3:40you'll see there's additional connectors
3:42here.
3:42And these are technically coming from the
3:45exchange.
3:46What I would love is for there just to be
3:48an exchange option in here that would then
3:50go and get them all of them.
3:51But nonetheless, you do have some
3:52additional connectors here.
3:53If you click on this little icon, it does
3:55sell you the look.
3:56These connectors are made available through
3:58the Tableau exchange.
3:59Installation is required.
4:01So what I would love is for these
4:02connectors to be installed in a very, very
4:05seamless,
4:06native way. I think at the moment when I
4:08select these, I will be able to click
4:11install and restart and it will come.
4:13But I think it has to leave a file in a
4:15specific location.
4:16And let's just try this now.
4:18And okay, let's go ahead and retry this.
4:21So this is Agiloft.
4:24Let's hit OK. I'll just see if this is
4:26actually as seamless as I thought it would
4:29be.
4:30Okay, it didn't actually restart for me.
4:33So let's go ahead and do that myself.
4:36Let's just close that. So now what you see
4:38is the web edit.
4:39Let's open up Tableau desktop again.
4:43Every time I look to the left, I'm looking
4:45at another screen.
4:46That's my main screen so that nothing opens
4:49up here unnecessarily during the middle of
4:51a demo.
4:52So here we are. We can open this workbook.
4:54We're going to go back to the connections.
4:56And the Agilsoft connector is what we're
5:01looking for.
5:01So it's no longer in this list. And now we
5:03've got 19 rather than 18.
5:06But now where is this appear to there it is
5:08very very top.
5:09It's added itself into the installed
5:11connectors list.
5:11So now when I go ahead and click on that,
5:13we do get everything working.
5:15So it's it is actually quite seamless.
5:17I think I was a bit unfair saying that the
5:20capability wasn't in here.
5:21It is in here. It's just not exactly
5:23working how I expected.
5:24So this is quite nice. Now it says 1918
5:28connectors.
5:29I'm fairly confident there should be more
5:31connectors.
5:32So let's just go ahead. I'm just going to
5:34go to the exchange itself.
5:35And we're just going to see how many
5:36connectors there are Tableau exchange.
5:39And we'll go to the connectors over here.
5:43So there were 19 when I logged in.
5:46There's no easy way of sort of aggregating
5:48this.
5:48So we'll just say okay if there's four per
5:50row,
5:51we've got one two three four five six seven
5:55.
5:55So that's it's about right actually and
5:57that is about the amount of connectors that
5:59are there.
6:00And this is the agile soft connector right
6:02here.
6:02So in essence you could actually argue that
6:06the title in products exchange is actually
6:08appropriate.
6:09Everything that you'd want from the
6:11connectors is available here.
6:12I started off this video by saying that was
6:14impossible and you watch me learn that that
6:16is not correct.
6:18So that's it. You can now pretty much
6:21connect to everything in the exchange in
6:23one place
6:23without ever having to go to the exchange
6:25itself.
6:26It's nice to have that actually it's a very
6:27very important sort of small win.
6:30But nonetheless if we go back to this page
6:33and we go ahead,
6:34let's say connect to a particular workbook.
6:36Let's open this one that we'd opened up
6:38before the final piece of this puzzle is
6:40that of course,
6:40you can drag a dashboard or workbook
6:42extension into the view and this loads up
6:45the extensions as well.
6:46So we've got extensions we've got
6:48connectors
6:49and we've got accelerators all inside of
6:51the product and fire away start using this.
6:54The jury's still out on the accelerators in
6:56my opinion the extensions.
6:57I think are pretty cool. The connectors are
7:00pretty cool.
7:00But for me the jury's still out on the
7:02accelerators which I call templates,
7:04but we'll see how those improve over time
7:06as more and more people start making great
7:07ones.
7:08Like my colleague has done here for Tableau
7:10server.
7:11Thanks for watching and I'll catch you in
7:14the next video.
