0:00In 2.2 Tableau continues to push forward
0:03with metrics.
0:03You can now edit the configuration of a
0:05metric without having to go back to the
0:07dashboard
0:08and change the configuration.
0:10Essentially metrics are becoming a little
0:12bit more portable.
0:13Let's get stuck.
0:14So we're here in the folder that I created
0:15back in 2020.2 where I have a bunch of
0:18metrics.
0:19So I wanted to specifically go back to
0:20something that I hadn't touched in a long,
0:22long while
0:23just to see if this feature really is that
0:25good.
0:26So let's go ahead and pick a metric.
0:28This one was refresh now.
0:29That doesn't really mean anything because
0:31the data sources behind these aren't
0:32getting
0:32refreshed that often at all.
0:34But the metrics get pinged every hour just
0:36to make sure they're absolutely fresh and
0:38so they always will be.
0:39Now that we're here, what I'm going to do
0:41is I'm going to move my face up here to the
0:42middle just so it's out of the way of the
0:44Chrome of the interface.
0:45So now what you can see is the old metrics
0:47interface that we're used to.
0:49But there's actually a couple of very, very
0:51subtle changes.
0:52Firstly, you've got this bit of context
0:54here.
0:55And if I escape this, I might just go over
0:56here to the right hand side.
0:58When I hover over this right hand space,
1:00just watch what happens when my mouse goes
1:02over
1:02this, you see that we get these two editing
1:05indicators.
1:06Essentially this means we can change this.
1:07So you can of course, change the
1:09description and add a test description.
1:12But when I save that, obviously, I haven't
1:14had to go back to the viz and do this from
1:15scratch.
1:16So this is good.
1:17But this is the key feature here, the
1:19configuration, when I click on that, I'm
1:21now able to edit
1:22the date range.
1:23So at the moment, it's the last 12 months,
1:25I can say last 60 months, and it will go
1:26back
1:26as far as that data source allows.
1:29And I can go to max, which is basically as
1:31much as the data set has.
1:33And then I can also even go to a custom
1:34range, let's say that you do a rolling 18
1:37month perspective
1:37on things, you can set this up too.
1:40But it doesn't stop there, because you can
1:42also add a historical comparison.
1:43So here you can see historical comparison
1:45type, compare to how many months prior and
1:47I can compare it to let's say, the previous
1:50three months, and also show a comparison
1:52line
1:52so that I can see that in the visualization
1:55.
1:55Now the other thing I can do is set a
1:57custom date, I can do a bunch of different
1:58things.
1:59But in essence, we've got full control of
2:01how this works and how it's all working.
2:03The comparison type is also really handy
2:05because as well as doing a historical
2:07comparison,
2:08you can just add a target line, for example
2:09.
2:09So here, if I want to set the target to 40,
2:11000, I could just go ahead and type that and
2:13it
2:13will draw a reference line across the
2:15visualization showing my target.
2:17And of course, this stays dynamic as it's
2:19supposed to.
2:20And you get this little label here at the
2:21bottom changing.
2:22When you're done, you can obviously change
2:24the context of the status when you're above
2:27the performance is good when you're at the
2:29value, it's neutral.
2:31And when you're below, it's bad.
2:32Let's hit save.
2:33And so you'll see that the indicator here
2:35goes red, when it's above, it goes green.
2:37These are really small touches, but they
2:39really do make for a better experience.
2:41But the key thing is when you have the
2:43metric functioning on server, this value up
2:46here
2:47will change color depending on the current
2:48sort of month that you're in over there as
2:50well.
2:51And the other thing that's new is this
2:53context over here.
2:54So I now can very quickly once I've set
2:55that sort of comparison, I can actually
2:57change
2:57that context anyway.
2:58So you can set it to default 18 months,
3:01which is exactly what you've typed in or
3:02what you
3:03set.
3:04But the 12 month, the 60 month and the max
3:06are just standard.
3:07So this is always going to be there and
3:09available to you to browse.
3:10So I think this is really nice because it
3:12brings some of the capability that we could
3:14kind of access in mobile just by swiping
3:16our finger left and right very easily back
3:18to
3:18desktop.
3:19But that's pretty much the change on
3:20metrics.
3:20Be sure to check out all my other videos on
3:22metrics at all on the channel.
3:23I could probably make a playlist for you
3:25just on metrics features that have been
3:27updated
3:27over time.
3:28But if you've enjoyed this video, check out
3:31some of the other videos on 2022.2 and I
3:34will
3:34catch you in the next video.
3:35Thanks for watching.
