How to do Nested Sorting in Tableau Desktop 2019.1 and newer

0:05ability to do nested sorting. If you found

0:09through a Google search, you're probably

0:12wondering why can't I just sort this simple

0:14table the

0:15way I want it to. And that's because nested

0:19sorting has only been added in 2019.1. So

0:21let me show you what that actually means.

0:23You can see here that I've got category and

0:25sales. Sales and columns, it's aggregating

0:28up the total for the whole entire table.

0:31And

0:31then we've also got the category. And if I

0:34hit this plus icon, you'll see that the

0:36category

0:37column stayed sorted. So technology is

0:39still the biggest category, then office

0:41supplies,

0:42then furniture. But the subcategories aren

0:46't sorting there as well. So what's actually

0:49going on here? Now, let me change that to a

0:52nested sort. So if I go back to the sorting

0:55options, and I hit a nested sort, then I

0:58close this down, and I hit expand again,

1:02you'll

1:03see that as I collapse and expand this

1:05Tableau is actually doing the sort again,

1:07for this

1:08category, then the subcategory, it's

1:10actually observing that sorting behavior

1:12all the way

1:13through the hierarchy. And that's really,

1:15really important, because you want to be

1:18users,

1:18you want users to be able to interact with

1:20the visualization really, really well. And

1:23if they have to keep sorting it themselves,

1:25then actually, that makes it less enjoyable
