0:00In Tableau 2019.1 Tableau have added the
0:05ability to automatically generate phone
0:07layouts on
0:08your dashboard.
0:10Now it's important to think about this
0:12feature in two ways.
0:14Firstly as an author and then secondly as
0:16an author who's publishing to Tableau
0:19server.
0:20Let's tackle the first one.
0:21So you can see in this dashboard here that
0:23I actually already have a phone layout.
0:25If I just click on the phone layout you'll
0:27see that this this looks like a very
0:29purposefully
0:29designed layout.
0:31If I use the automatic layout this is
0:34actually what Tableau will do.
0:36And I have to be honest this feature doesn
0:38't quite hit the mark for me because I
0:39actually
0:40think the correct sort of design choice was
0:43actually this dashboard here which decides
0:47to take some of the less personal
0:48information away and only leaves the
0:50functionality you'd
0:51actually want to use on your phone.
0:54If I go over to the customers dashboard
0:56this sort of this this point is more
0:58pronounced.
0:59So let's go over to the tablet view where
1:01you can see that the table has been removed
1:03to again make it easy for the user to use
1:06this dashboard on the go.
1:08Now I don't have a phone layout here so
1:09what I have to do is I have to go into the
1:11device
1:12preview to bring out this tab at the top.
1:15Now if I hit the tablet menu here and I hit
1:18phone you'll see that I get this sort of
1:20border
1:21that shows me where the phone view would be
1:23.
1:23And I can untick this to simulate the space
1:26the Tableau mobile app interface takes.
1:29So this little gap here is essentially what
1:32the Tableau mobile app interface is going
1:34to take.
1:35Now when I hit add phone layout it
1:38automatically generates this layout.
1:41So I haven't done any work here it's
1:43automatically generated it for me.
1:45And if I then click edit layout myself then
1:47I can change this and make the sort of styl
1:50istic
1:50design choices that I want.
1:52Now a lot of authors publish their dash
1:55boards without ever going to the device
1:58preview pane.
1:59And if you're in the habit of doing this
2:01then this feature is going to sting you a
2:03little
2:03bit because if you don't untick this option
2:06at the top to auto generate layout then it
2:10's
2:10actually going to do this on all your
2:12layouts if someone happens to use their
2:14mobile device
2:15even if you haven't actually authored it or
2:17had a look at it.
2:18So I actually posted another video I'm
2:19going to put this in the links in the top
2:21right
2:22hand side showing you how to switch that
2:24feature off if you'd like to have full
2:26control of
2:27how your dashboard looks to your user.
2:29You might actually be happy for them to use
2:31the desktop version of your dashboard
2:33because
2:34even though it doesn't fit the user can
2:36sort of navigate or move around the
2:38dashboard themselves
2:39and it's a largely familiar sort of look
2:41even though it's maybe not the best sort of
2:44user
2:44experience.
