How to build a Bullet chart in Tableau | Tableau Charts

In two minutes I'll turn a plain bar chart into a working bullet chart in Tableau.

Part ofTableau Charts
  • Start with a simple bar chart using regions on rows and current cells on columns
  • Add target and previous year cells to detail so they're available as reference lines
  • Use a reference line set per cell with sum aggregation to show the target
  • Create a dual axis to layer the previous year bar behind the current cells bar, then synchronise the axes
  • Hide and show headers carefully when reordering pills so both axes remain visible

Learn how to create a bullet chart in Tableau in this short video tutorial.  A bullet short is essentially a bar chart with reference lines and you can add more information to it by also using a dual axis technique. In this video I shoe you how to compare three values that present the current sales value, the target and last year’s sales value all on one chart.
