0:00Hey, it's Tim here. In today's video we're
0:02pushing forward with charts and today I
0:03want to show you a trick combining two
0:05charts I've already shown you how to build.
0:07A pie chart and a bar chart. We're going to
0:09try something called proportional brushing.
0:12Sometimes this is better than filtering.
0:14Let me show you how it works.
0:15So here you can see that I have two charts
0:17on a dashboard.
0:18Now if we just go ahead and enable the
0:20filter that you can see this little icon
0:22right here.
0:23If we go ahead and click on that you'll see
0:25that it actually allows us to filter this
0:27chart.
0:28The problem with filtering is it changes
0:30the context of the visualization and
0:32sometimes when you select an item you just
0:35want to see how it's represented in the
0:36existing data.
0:37You don't want it to remove data from the
0:39view.
0:40And so what you can do instead is something
0:41a little bit different.
0:43Let's just go ahead and disable that filter
0:45and let's go ahead into the bar chart.
0:48And what we're going to do is to do
0:49something called creating a set.
0:52What a set allows us to do is essentially
0:54put members from a dimension into a
0:56grouping.
0:57And then Tablo remembers that grouping for
0:58the features.
0:59So I'll click on this option here that says
1:01set and I'll select all the values.
1:03The reason we want all the values is when
1:04nothing is selected I want this to be the
1:06default state.
1:07So I'll go ahead and select OK.
1:09Now you can see our set is there.
1:11If I drag that category set onto color you
1:12'll see that the colors change a little bit.
1:15We did a little bit of formatting and then
1:16sort of styling and it's changed one of
1:18these.
1:19So what I need to do is go back and just
1:21set the colors again.
1:23Let's just go set this color here. Let's
1:24see if I can actually specify this over
1:26here.
1:27It's just gone off screen my little color
1:29palette.
1:30We'll bring it back on screen hit OK hit
1:32apply and that should bring it back.
1:34Actually that's not that good.
1:36I'm sorry I'm really pernickety about my
1:37colors.
1:38So let's go ahead try that again.
1:40That's a little bit better. That's more
1:41like what we had before.
1:43So you might need to do a little bit of a
1:44tweak to get that to work.
1:45But the key thing here is to notice that
1:47the color is now being driven by the set.
1:51What this means is if we come back to the
1:53dashboard and we set up something called a
1:56set action.
1:57When I click on a category it's going to
1:59highlight the members of that category in
2:02the underlying data in the bar chart.
2:04So let's go ahead and set that up.
2:05Dashboard actions and this time we should
2:07see there's no actions because obviously we
2:09removed that filter before.
2:11Go ahead and set a set action and this is
2:13going to change the set values.
2:16We want to go from our pie chart and we
2:18want to change the target set here category
2:21set.
2:22So essentially saying when I select my pie
2:24chart take whatever I've selected and add
2:26those values to the category set.
2:29In this case if I select furniture it will
2:31apply that to the furniture set.
2:33And when I clear the selection you can just
2:34see there's another option here.
2:36This will add all values to the set so we
2:38'll bring everything back and go ahead and
2:40hit OK.
2:41And now when we select you get something
2:43called proportional brushing.
2:46Now this is really cool because it shows
2:47you what part of your data is represented.
2:49But there's one weird thing here which is
2:50that these I think are the wrong way around
2:53.
2:53So what I'll do is I'll go back in here now
2:55that I can see both items and I can
2:57actually just switch these around very
2:58easily.
2:59I can just drag out onto the top.
3:01You can just see that there that changes
3:02the order here in Tableau.
3:04I'll add a little bit of a border around
3:06these items so it looks really nice.
3:09Don't forget the blue bar is actually what
3:10we marked out in the data.
3:12So that's like a dual axis that I showed in
3:14the previous bar chart.
3:16And then with the out we'll just go up here
3:18go to the gray palette.
3:20Let's find the gray palette and let's find
3:21a really subdued gray so it matches the
3:23color that we're going with.
3:25And there we go.
3:26So we can still see the data and just over
3:28here with this little Gantt chart hack that
3:30I've got my dual axis.
3:32The rest of the data is represented.
3:34And now if I go back to my simple dashboard
3:35you can see the proportional brushing is
3:36working really really well.
3:38I can go ahead click out you'll see the
3:39whole thing fills up.
3:41If I click on another set it obviously
3:43changes that.
3:44So that's really really cool.
3:45It shows you how these different
3:46proportions represent.
3:48And if you have animations switched on
3:49remember to do that you just go to format
3:50select animations and you'll see that it
3:53should be on by default.
3:55If you don't have that on you maybe got an
3:56older version or it's been disabled go
3:58ahead switch it on and you'll get that nice
4:00animation effect between the two.
4:02Super simple trick.
4:03It's called proportional brushing and it's
4:04sometimes better than filtering.
4:06Hope you enjoy the video and I'll catch you
4:08in the next one.
4:09Bye.
