Build Sankey Charts in Tableau Public in 30 seconds | Tableau Public Vizart Pilot

0:02chart in Tableau in 20 seconds flat?

0:05Don't believe me? Let's get started.

0:07So as part of a pilot program, if you head

0:09over to Tableau Public, you'll find a

0:11little banner on the top

0:12that mentions something which is about a

0:14capability in Tableau Public available

0:16until the end of June.

0:18Essentially you can build Sankey and Radial

0:21charts in Tableau Public in the web author

0:23ing space.

0:23So let's go ahead and let's try and do that

0:25. I'll go over to Discover, we'll go to

0:27Create,

0:28select web authoring and then we'll go and

0:30connect it to a data source.

0:31Just to keep things simple, I am going to

0:33use Superstore Sales.

0:34You can go and use your own data source

0:36here, try whatever you want.

0:37I highly encourage you do that actually and

0:39then we'll be able to see sort of what you

0:41can create.

0:42But as this loads, it's going to upload my

0:44Excel file and we'll get the data modeling

0:46window inside of Tableau.

0:48It will tell us that we've got three tabs

0:51and three, what are these, named ranges

0:54inside of the Excel file.

0:56We'll drop orders onto the data modeling

0:58window, we'll get a logical table.

1:01We'll go to Sheet 1 and it'll start to load

1:04the data source in the cloud.

1:06Now here's the thing, Sankey charts, they

1:09've previously required blogs and for the

1:12record,

1:12these have been very good blogs. They're

1:14even templates that allow you to hook these

1:16things in.

1:16But the problem with that is that it's

1:18always required work and part of the magic,

1:20part of the power of Tableau

1:22is that you can have an idea and bring it

1:24to life just to try something out and try

1:27different ways of expressing information.

1:29Now Sankey charts are a little bit of a,

1:31what do you call them, a little bit

1:32controversial because

1:34you know if you're a purist, you might

1:35think Sankey charts aren't actually useful

1:37in a business context.

1:38But actually in some cases, they're a

1:40really good way of visualizing the flow

1:42from one dimension to another.

1:44So Sankey charts, 30 seconds, here we go.

1:48First I'll take, well first we'll change

1:50the marks type, we'll go to marks, select

1:53Sankey.

1:53Then we'll take category and put it on

1:56level. Then I'll take segment and put that

2:00on level.

2:00Then I'll take subcategory and put that on

2:03level. That is really smart.

2:05It's done a whole bunch of stuff for me

2:08that I'm immediately happy with.

2:10Now the next thing is you've got this other

2:12marks item here called links.

2:14So let's go ahead and actually try and put

2:15something useful on that. I'll move my face

2:17out of the way.

2:18My face gets in the way all the time.

2:19Put this on link. Let's put quantity on

2:21link and there you go.

2:22The lines are now controlled by the

2:24quantity. We're done by the way. That's it.

2:26That's all that's required.

2:27And this is super interesting because not

2:29only is this just a typical chart you could

2:31build in Tableau,

2:33it's interactive as well. So you can see

2:34how hovering over these you're getting the

2:36interactivity that you're used to.

2:38And I think this is super super powerful. I

2:40can't believe it's this easy.

2:43In fact this is exactly the magic of Table

2:46au. I know there are other tools out there

2:48that can do different things.

2:49Try and do this in D3 in less than 20

2:51seconds and if you can do that I'll

2:53entertain maybe even considering trying D3.

2:56But this is what makes Tableau special.

2:58This is just one of the chart types. In the

3:01next video I'll do one on the radial chart

3:03as well.

3:04So go ahead and check that out. But that's

3:10This will no doubt make it to Tableau

3:12Desktop. I think what's going on here is

3:14they're trying something different.

3:16They're trying a way of adding more charts.

3:18That's my hunch and it just so happens that

3:21Sankey and Radial Charts are those two

3:23additions.

3:24Because previously we've never had this

3:26sort of trial of charts in Tableau Public.

3:28So for it to be happening in the cloud in a

3:30web interface is probably an important

3:32thing of some sort.

3:33There's some significance. We'll understand

3:35at some point in the future.
