Action & filter menu changes in Desktop & Web Authoring: New in Tableau 2021.3

0:00Hey, Sam here. In this video, we're going

0:02to be talking about, I think a really

0:04interesting

0:04change to Tableau desktop that's come from

0:07web edit. Let's get stuck into this. So

0:10here, I have

0:11a version of Tableau, it's actually the

0:13previous version 21.2. And I've just loaded

0:16up the default

0:17dashboard. If you're wondering where this

0:19is, you can actually go over here to the

0:20bottom and just

0:21select this first one Superstore sales, and

0:23open that up. And essentially, you'll get

0:26this dashboard

0:27here. Now, what's interesting in this

0:29release is that Tableau say they've updated

0:31the action

0:32interface to match the web version. So

0:34essentially, what they've done is they've

0:37brought the web

0:37version of the feature and brought it into

0:39desktop. And what that means is that it has

0:42to have the same

0:43feature parity, because you can't put

0:45something in desktop and take features away

0:47. So this is sort of,

0:48I think, a really interesting change. I go

0:50to dashboard here and actions, I'm on the

0:52Mac,

0:53admittedly. So this is what the old action

0:55interface used to look like. This is how it

0:57's

0:57always looked like on a Mac. Now,

0:59admittedly, I'm not going from Mac to Mac

1:01here, I'm not going from

1:03Windows to Windows, I don't have the setup

1:06correctly across the same machine, I'm

1:08having

1:09to switch between Windows and Mac, it's a

1:11long story, let's not get into it. But

1:13nevertheless,

1:13this is the old interface, and you go to

1:15add an action, you get this pop up, it's

1:16actually been

1:17the same in desktop, it's slightly

1:19different, slightly less polished, because

1:21the Windows

1:22version has Windows sort of toolbars here.

1:24But if I go over to this one, this is

1:26actually running 21.3.

1:28And essentially, what's happening here is

1:31that both of the Mac and the Windows

1:32version has exactly the

1:34same setup as what we see in Web Edit. So

1:36let's go down here, go to actions. And you

1:39'll see that this

1:40actually has a new feature, someone's

1:42sending me a message because they're so

1:43excited about this.

1:44But nevertheless, you can see this now has

1:47the same version as Web Edit from Web

1:48Authoring. So

1:49that's really it. It's not really much of a

1:51quality of life improvement. It's just a

1:52change. But I

1:53think it's an important one, because it

1:55tells you that they're getting even closer

1:57to getting

1:58desktop with feature parity with Web Edit.

2:00And this is one of those things, actions

2:02and faces,

2:03which is one of those things that people

2:05have to have. Now, we're not done there yet

2:07. Because of

2:08course, this is great. We've got a feature

2:10coming over from Web Edit to desktop. What

2:12about features

2:13coming from desktop to Web Edit? Well, that

2:16's also happening too. Let's go over to

2:18Tableau Online,

2:19let's just open this up. And you can see

2:21here that I've actually got a very sort of

2:23nice view.

2:23Let's go to my homepage actually, and we'll

2:26open up this Superstore workbook again. But

2:28now we're

2:28going to do it in Web Edit. Let's go into

2:31this. And what we'll see here is some

2:34changes essentially.

2:35And what is great about this new feature is

2:38they've actually updated the filtering

2:40dialog box

2:41to have the same features as desktop. So

2:44now the filter dialog is the same on

2:46desktop,

2:47and on Web Edit. So let's go in here. And

2:50essentially, if we go into any of these

2:52sheets,

2:52and just bring up the filter dialog, we

2:54have the full set of features that we're

2:56used to. So let's

2:57just open this region filter, click to edit

3:00fields filter. And you'll actually see that

3:02we have the

3:03same sort of functionality. Now it looks

3:05slightly different. I'm not gonna lie, this

3:07does look a

3:07little bit different to what I'm used to.

3:09But essentially, all the sections are there

3:11. We've

3:12got the wildcard, the conditions, the top

3:14and bottom. And as you click on each of

3:16these,

3:16they obviously expand. And we've also got

3:18our summary here on the bottom left hand

3:20side. So

3:21that's really nice to see. If I go to the

3:23Mac version here, and I'm actually I'm just

3:25on the

3:26Mac version, let me close this action

3:27window down. So we go back to this, let's

3:29go to the same chart,

3:31and actually make sure that all the

3:32features are there. It's exactly the same

3:34chart. And you can

3:34see that this is still using the old style

3:37design. So my guess is that in the next

3:39release, we'll

3:40ditch this design, and we'll switch over to

3:43the web edit version a little later on. So

3:45all the

3:46same features are here. And again, if I go

3:48to web edit here, you can see that all the

3:50same capabilities

3:51are there. Okay, so this is really nice to

3:54see. I like that this is picking up pace.

3:57There's really

3:57some momentum on this web edit train. And

4:00guys, I think very soon, you'll be able to

4:02just use Tableau

4:04in the browser. No holes bars, we are

4:05getting closer. I've been singing about

4:07this for a year,

4:08but we're really getting there. I don't

4:09know why I'm excited. Maybe it's because

4:11people won't have

4:12to wait days to get a license key to

4:13install Tableau. But also maybe because it

4:16will change

4:16some paradigms it feels to me like they can

4:19do more with web edit and the browser

4:21technology

4:22than they can with software, especially

4:24given now that they're part of Salesforce

4:26now they have to

4:26sort of integrate with many web

4:28technologies anyway. And now that cloud

4:30computing is pretty

4:31normal, the web might actually be the best

4:33place for Tableau to be developing their

4:35features. So
