The new viz toolbar: New in Tableau 2022.1
I didn't realise how passionate I was about UX until I started recording this toolbar walkthrough.
- The old congested top banner has been inverted so the toolbar now sits lower with the breadcrumbs and device layout moved to the top
- Actions are grouped into clearer sections, with 'Watch' holding subscriptions, metrics and alerts (I argue 'Track' would be a clearer verb)
- Download now consolidates image, data, crosstab and PDF export in one place, though the icons are still not intuitive
- Left-hand controls (forward/back, reset, pause, refresh, replay animations, accelerated views) only got new icons rather than functional changes
- The new Data Details side pane and inconsistent modal-versus-side-panel behaviour highlight UX habits that aren't rewarded consistently
0:00Hey it's Tim here. Today, a brief video on
0:02the new Viz toolbar that is new in 22.1.
0:05It's just a design change. Essentially,
0:08Tableau have updated this sort of top area
0:11of Tableau,
0:11and actually this is interesting because
0:13they first changed this back in version 10.
0:15That's
0:16when we actually got this sort of design
0:18with a dark blue banner going across the
0:20top, and as
0:21they've added features that banner became a
0:23bit congested. So what I've actually got
0:25here is I
0:26took a screenshot of the previous version
0:28and I've got it up against the current
0:30version.
0:31And essentially you can see that it just
0:33got so busy up there. So the top one is a
0:35new look,
0:36the bottom one is the old look. If we just
0:38scroll across here you'll see that that
0:40middle pane just
0:41got way too busy, and in essence it was
0:44kind of taking up a lot of space and it
0:46didn't make sense.
0:47So what you can see is they've sort of
0:49inverted the design a bit. So the the
0:52toolbar itself has
0:53sort of come down. This sort of bar that
0:56goes across this sort of big dark area has
0:58now become
0:59the main toolbar, so it actually has the
1:01most visual attention. The breadcrumbs have
1:04gone across
1:04the top, and you can see that just up here.
1:07And that also brings some very sort of good
1:11features
1:12when it comes to things like device layout,
1:15which also go across the top. And that was
1:18already there.
1:19Essentially that part of it hasn't actually
1:21changed. You can see that these are almost
1:23identical,
1:24but the bit that has changed is everything
1:26in between where this basically this list
1:29just became way too long. So what they've
1:31done is they've sort of grouped these up
1:33into more manageable groups. So you've got
1:35these groups here, and I'm going to switch
1:37over to
1:38Tableau to kind of show you what that looks
1:40like. So let's go back and we can actually
1:42take a look
1:42at these. Now depending on where you are in
1:44Tableau you'll see different things. For
1:47example
1:47in your personal space you might not see
1:49all these options because of course
1:51everything in your
1:51personal space is personal to you, so the
1:53share option won't be there because you can
1:55't share
1:55something that's supposed to be always
1:57private to you. But if you go to the watch
2:00section you now
2:01have the subscription metrics and alerts.
2:03This makes a lot of sense if you want to
2:04watch you
2:06know changes in this particular thing it
2:08makes sense that these are the ways to do
2:10that. I would
2:11have preferred a different sort of verb in
2:14my mind this should have been something
2:17else like track.
2:18Track makes a lot more sense because that
2:20is actually what you're doing you're
2:22tracking the
2:23metrics you're tracking the information
2:25with alerts you're doing it with
2:26subscriptions.
2:27That to me is sort of the more logical verb
2:29. Of course you watch visualizations I'm
2:32sure someone
2:32somewhere spent as much time maybe more
2:34time than I have thinking about this but to
2:37me track makes
2:37more sense that but that to me is the
2:39actual verb although ideally what they want
2:42to do is probably
2:43draw some synergies with the visualization
2:46you look at a visualization and look didn't
2:50make sense
2:50so they went with watch who knows let me
2:52know if you think I'm wrong on that one. If
2:55you want to
2:55add views or comments that's just the same
2:57old comment icon. I think this is
2:59interesting this
3:00is the only thing that has sort of its own
3:02button and I think this will change over
3:04time there is no
3:05doubt that this has been done to allow for
3:07more space. I think we have one group here
3:09which is
3:10watch I think there might be another group
3:12here which will be something else we don't
3:13know what
3:14that could be and if you're going to track
3:15something that might be one thing maybe you
3:17want
3:17to act on things they might be sort of
3:19things like extensions that allow you to
3:22take actions that
3:23could be another verb and there could be a
3:24drop down with lots of different things for
3:27example
3:27email converse all these things that could
3:29sort of happen but at the moment we've
3:31still got that
3:32spread across different tools like the
3:34commenting toolbar and so on and so forth.
3:36When it comes to
3:37downloading data of course we've got this
3:40download option this makes a lot of sense I
3:42don't like the
3:43icons here I don't think everyone knows
3:44that this icon means download it's a bit
3:46like the save icon
3:47it uses a floppy drive people haven't used
3:49floppy drive in decades but it's just the
3:52you know
3:52universal sign for saving something I think
3:54it's one of those things where over time I
3:57hope this
3:57changes but they've updated the icons these
3:59are nice and sharp and it makes sense that
4:01everything
4:02you need to download whether it's image
4:04data across type pdf it's all here in one
4:06place.
4:06This icon here just switches to full screen
4:08view and when you switch to full screen
4:10view that that
4:11bar across the top disappears so we've lost
4:13that there when you come out of it it comes
4:15back then
4:16of course you've got the share function the
4:18share function does exactly what it used to
4:19do before
4:20which is load this share sheet in the
4:22middle of the page so that's not changed so
4:24that's the new
4:24viz toolbar over on the left hand side I
4:27forgot to touch on these items here and
4:30this hasn't really
4:31changed that much all they've done is
4:32change the icon so you've got your forward
4:34and back
4:34you've got your reset which gets the
4:36visualization back to the beginning you've
4:39got the pause and
4:40refresh data sets which are these two icons
4:43you've got the newly added replay
4:45animations button that
4:46was added in the previous release I've got
4:48a video on that so check it out you've got
4:50the accelerated
4:52views button I'm really struggling with
4:54this particular feature because I basically
4:56can't
4:57find an example where it works and by work
5:00I mean an example where it actually says it
5:02can accelerate
5:03the view so I actually did a video and the
5:07conclusion of the video was I can't find
5:10anything
5:10that needs this feature and but then I
5:12thought now maybe I need to look a little
5:13bit harder so
5:14I'm going to try and build a data set try
5:16and make a live connection make this
5:18feature sort of work
5:19until we get something to work then we'll
5:21talk about the process and try and see if
5:23we can
5:24make it sort of more repeatable you've got
5:26the other bits of information here now you
5:28've got data
5:29details now this is a new area I think this
5:31is going to become an ever-increasing sort
5:33of a useful
5:34part of Tableau what I what I find jarring
5:37here is that the options over here but the
5:40change happens
5:41over there to me the data details should be
5:44over here on the right hand side and that
5:47should then
5:48appear there like if I'm clicking on
5:50something on the left it's a bit jarring
5:52when it appears over
5:53on the other side I know maybe that's where
5:55they want to put things but to me this
5:58makes the most
5:59sense over on the right side I don't know
6:01maybe it's just me then you've got the
6:03saved views and
6:04that makes sense because it's a modal and
6:06so I always think sometimes interface in
6:09Tableau is a
6:09little bit consistent you know inconsistent
6:13even why is this a modal and why is this a
6:16side pain
6:16and can I as a user choose where those
6:18things go I know it's kind of one of those
6:21weird things that
6:22um you know you maybe didn't think of but I
6:24would love in most other creative tools I
6:27could
6:27for example say oh can I pin this over here
6:29on the right and it becomes that becomes
6:31the home
6:32of that tool so if I want the custom views
6:34options on the right I can move it there um
6:36but giving me
6:37this what looks like a modal view but I
6:39even can't move it anywhere all I can do is
6:42click on it
6:43whereas in other cases if I go write a
6:45calculation it is modal if I go do a share
6:48sheet I can move it
6:49around there's just a lot of
6:50inconsistencies across the whole user
6:52interface and I'm not a
6:53uxx but I don't profess to know anything
6:56about it but when people form habits and
6:58then those habits
6:59aren't rewarded consistently that's when
7:02you start to get people not understanding
7:04how tools work so
7:05I like the new vis toolbar I like the
7:07direction I hope this is version one but I
7:10would really like
7:11um sort of more aspects of the interface
7:13really tidied up um why is it that I can
7:16drag that but
7:16I can't do that when I go to um view this
7:19you know this this to me should be modal as
7:22well I should be
7:23able to move that around it doesn't need to
7:25be but that would be great if this is in
7:27the sidebar over
7:28here I'd love to be able to undock it and
7:30make it modal so that I can do whatever I
7:32want that's sort
7:33of how tools work today so a few challenges
7:36there it's sort of one of those things
7:38where before no
7:39one said anything but now you've made an
7:40update you've shown people that there's
7:42some change to
7:43be done and so you know all the old issues
7:45sort of come out so look I think I've made
7:47this video
7:47far longer than it ought to be I didn't
7:49realize I was that passionate about ux
7:52until I started
7:53recording so if you've enjoyed this video
7:54let me know what you think in the comments
7:56below and I'll
7:57catch you in the next video
