0:00One of the new features in 2020.2 is the
0:04ability to use your keyboard to control
0:06parameters.
0:07To show you this I'm actually going to open
0:09the Superstore workbook directly from Table
0:12au
0:12Server because this is a web only function
0:14you don't get this in Tableau Desktop.
0:16So in order to do that I need to open up
0:18the Superstore workbook so I'm going to
0:20navigate
0:20to that.
0:24Okay once I'm in the Superstore workbook I
0:26know the what if forecast here this is the
0:28default workbook that gets published up.
0:30The what if forecast has a couple of
0:32parameters here on the right hand side.
0:34So to show you this feature I'd really like
0:36you to pay attention to two things.
0:38I'm going to start hitting tab on my
0:40keyboard and you'll notice that Tableau
0:42will start
0:42navigating through the interface.
0:44Let me just hit that now and you'll notice
0:46the first thing it highlights is the
0:47refresh
0:48option.
0:49If I hit it again it goes to the what if
0:51forecast.
0:52If I hit it again it hops over onto this
0:55year order date filter and I hit it again
0:58and I
0:58keep hitting it it's just navigating the
1:00interface one by one.
1:01I'm sort of following it with my mouse now
1:04you can see it's on all and now you can see
1:06it's on the parameter and I know it's on
1:07the parameter because you get this little
1:09blue
1:10icon around the parameter.
1:11If I hit tab again it goes to the next one.
1:14If I hold shift and then tab it goes back
1:16one so it can actually go backwards as well
1:19as forwards.
1:20Now the new feature here is I can then use
1:23my arrow keys to just nudge this value up
1:26and down and it goes up and down in the
1:27increments that have been specified in the
1:29parameter.
1:30So you can see I'm nudging it up and the
1:32numbers on the screen are changing as I do
1:35that.
1:35So that's a really cool feature.
1:37A lot of productivity hacks especially on
1:39PCs and computers involve not using the
1:41mouse.
1:41So if you can master the keyboard controls
1:43and just be able to navigate these very
1:45very
1:45quickly then it's a great way of sort of
1:47controlling Tableau and controlling these
1:49parameters.
1:50And it also makes it much much better for
1:52accessibility for those people who can't
1:54use
1:54a mouse.
1:55So it's a great accessibility addition.
1:57Now the other thing to bear in mind is that
1:59obviously this highlights a couple of other
2:01options like for example you can see here I
2:04'm navigating this top menu.
2:06I'm just waving at it here now and if I
2:08just keep going across with my mouse you
2:10can see
2:10that I'm using that essentially to go
2:13through the menu and it's a really nice way
2:15of then
2:16navigating the dashboard and I can
2:17basically do this without ever touching the
2:20mouse.
2:20I can sort of just interact with the whole
2:22visualization if I get comfortable with how
2:25these shortcuts work.
2:26But that's pretty much it.
2:27The feature in a nutshell right there.
