How to use the new Explain data enhancements in Tableau Desktop 2019.4

0:00Hey, it's Tim here. In Tableau 2019.4,

0:05Tableau have improved the ability for

0:07explained data

0:08to look at geospatial fields, unvisualized

0:10measures and calculated fields. To show you

0:13that I'm first going to show you the exact

0:16same feature in 2019.3 prior to the

0:19improvement.

0:20You can see here that I'm in Tableau 2019.3

0:24.2. And in a past video, I actually showed

0:26you

0:27how to use explained data to dig into the

0:29underlying behavior behind this particular

0:32data point in London. Now you can see the

0:35analysis on profit and sales has pulled out

0:38sort of two factors, number of records

0:41behind a particular data point. And

0:43secondly, an

0:44extreme value of a particular sale. If I go

0:47to 2019.4, I'll just show you that I'm in

0:502019.4 now,

0:53you can see this is exactly the same chart.

0:55However, if I go into the explained data

0:58option here,

0:59you'll see that without having to change

1:02anything in the visualization, the added

1:05functionality is

1:06working. Because here you can see that

1:08Tableau is actually analyzed the

1:09geographical or spatial

1:11fields in this data set, pulling out some

1:13analysis at a state level. It's also done a

1:17little bit of a

1:18deeper dive into some of the other metrics.

1:20So it's actually reporting back on a

1:22geographical level

1:23in a little bit more of a clear way. And

1:26some of the other analysis we saw before is

1:29still here.

1:29So this extreme value is still being pulled

1:32through. But this sort of gives you a hint

1:34of

1:34how this feature is going to improve in the

1:36future. We're going to continue to add

1:38depth

1:38and breadth to this capability, but

1:41essentially we'll all live within the same

1:43feature.
