How to use login based License Management in Tableau 2020.1

0:08Essentially this feature allows you, a user

0:10or author of a Tableau desktop dashboard to

0:13basically activate your version of Tableau

0:16using your Tableau server on-premise or if

0:19you've got Tableau online you can also use

0:21that to activate your role-based customer

0:24licenses.

0:25Now let me show you how that feature works.

0:28Now I've already got an activated version

0:29of Tableau but I'll basically walk you

0:31through

0:31the steps of how it works.

0:33You need to go to the help option at the

0:35top and you'll see here the very last

0:36option is

0:37the ability to manage your product keys.

0:40Now if I click on that option you'll see

0:42here that my license is already activated

0:44here

0:45but if you go ahead and click activate if

0:47you haven't got an activated version you'll

0:49see these two options.

0:51Now all you need to do is hit the second

0:53option and then you'll get the option to

0:55login to

0:55a Tableau server.

0:57In my case it says Tableau online but you

0:59could just type in the address of your

1:02Tableau

1:02server like I'm doing here.

1:04So I could just say Tableau server dot com

1:07and then you hit enter connect and then you

1:09'll

1:09be able to login and choose your license.

1:12In my case I'm using Tableau online so let

1:16's hop on into the server.

1:19Okay once you login you then have the

1:21ability to choose a particular site.

1:23In my case I'm using Tableau online so I

1:25have to select the appropriate one and once

1:28I do that it will login and it will

1:30automatically go and check with the server

1:33to see if activation

1:35is enabled and in my case it's not because

1:37I'm using a test environment but if it's

1:39successful you should see an option here

1:42which will confirm that your license has

1:44been activated.

1:46It's using your credentials to essentially

1:48check if you have the rights to have a

1:50license.

1:51So this is also the message you'd see if

1:53you didn't have a valid license it would

1:55just have a slightly different message.

1:58That's pretty much it.

1:59Once you've got that and everything

2:01activates you're then able to just hop on

2:03into Tableau

2:03server and also use Tableau desktop with

2:07that same login.
