0:00Hey, it's Tim here.
0:04And in today's video, I'm going to be
0:05taking you through how to change the
0:07Discover pane
0:08once you've already installed Tableau and
0:10maybe set a Discover pane previously.
0:13In the previous video, I showed you how to
0:15change this Discover pane.
0:16Here I've changed it to Google.com.
0:17So you can see it's not optimized for this
0:19amount of space.
0:21But what we're going to do is change the
0:23setting in Windows.
0:25In order to do that, you just need to open
0:28the registry for your computer.
0:30And so in order to do this, you will need
0:33to have admin rights.
0:34This video is probably geared towards
0:36computer admins who manage a lot of
0:38machines and can
0:39push registry updates over the network to
0:42lots of machines and change this for lots
0:45of users at once.
0:46In order to get to the registry, I'm just
0:49going to run the Windows R. This will allow
0:50me to get to this little shortcut here.
0:53Just type in regedit, and that will open up
0:55the registry settings.
0:57This is a very dangerous place to be on a
0:59machine.
0:59So only open this if you know what you're
1:01doing.
1:02Now you'll see here I've already got this
1:04open to the relevant hierarchy.
1:06What you essentially need to do is open up
1:09this folder, local machine.
1:12Go to your software folder and go all the
1:14way down to Tableau.
1:15And then you'll see that there's multiple
1:17folders in the Tableau directory.
1:19Go to the version of Tableau in which you
1:21want to change the Discover Pane URL.
1:23And then you'll see here that if you've
1:25changed it before, you'll actually already
1:27have this
1:28Discover Pane category.
1:30But if you haven't, you just need to right
1:32click on the folder, create new, set up a
1:35new key, and then you can set the Discover
1:37Pane here.
1:38But as I've said before, I've already done
1:40this, so I don't need to create another one
1:42.
1:42So I'll just go ahead and delete that
1:44particular entry.
1:45I'll go to this Discover Pane option, and
1:48you can see here that it's set to Google.
1:50com,
1:50which is what I showed you earlier.
1:52And so what I'm going to do, I'm just going
1:54to modify this setting by right clicking
1:55the
1:56name and hitting Modify.
1:57And then here we can change it to another
2:00URL.
2:01Now I'm just going to set this to the Table
2:03au blog.
2:03So I'm just going to find the Tableau blog.
2:07Typically just Google that.
2:08And then we're just going to grab this URL.
2:10I'm going to copy that, minimize this, and
2:12then we're going to paste this in here.
2:15Now that we've done that, we hit OK.
2:17And now that's basically applied.
2:19When we close this window, that registry
2:22change has been applied.
2:24And now when we open the software again,
2:27you'll see that the right hand side has
2:31changed to
2:32the Tableau blog.
2:33So this is how you change the Discover Pane
2:36once you've already installed Tableau on a
2:39machine and maybe even changed the Discover
2:41Pane previously.
2:42This is a great technique for admins who
2:44control lots of machines with Tableau
2:46software installed.
2:48It can also maybe be done at the same time
2:49when Tableau is installed so that users
2:51automatically
2:52get the correct Discover Pane settings when
2:55the software is installed.
2:58Check out my other video for how to do that
3:00at the point of installation.
