Unified notification experience: New in tableau 2021.1
Notifications now have a more centralised home with better controls.
- The notification centre, accessed via the bell icon, now keeps notifications visible until you explicitly remove them, even after marking as read
- You can filter between read and unread notifications using separate tabs to help triage them quickly
- The gear icon takes you to a settings page where you choose whether to receive notifications in Tableau, by email, or both, per type (comments, mentions, flow runs, extract jobs)
- Webhooks currently only notify via email, with no in-Tableau option yet
0:00Hey it's Tim here, in today's video I'm
0:01going to be taking you through the new
0:03unified notification experience in Tableau
0:052221.1. It's a bit of a tongue twister to
0:08say,
0:09but here we are. Essentially what they've
0:10done is they've improved the notification
0:12center,
0:12so they've essentially given you two things
0:14. They've improved the interface, they've
0:16brought
0:17a lot of notifications that should be there
0:19into one place, and then they've also given
0:21some control so you can essentially choose
0:23where you get notifications. Let me show
0:25you.
0:26I head over to my Tableau Online instance,
0:28you'll see that I'm already logged in, and
0:30if you go up
0:30to the bell icon and click on it, you'll
0:32see that this now has a new interface. Now
0:34you can see I've
0:35already sent myself a test notification
0:37just a few minutes ago, but it has a very
0:39nice feel to it.
0:41Now one of the nice things is that your
0:43notifications stay here, so even if you've
0:46seen a notification you can mark it as red,
0:48they don't disappear once you've marked
0:50them as red. So
0:51if you sort of rely on notifications to be
0:53made aware of where things are and someone
0:56shared
0:56something with you, until you explicitly
0:58remove the notification, that notification
1:01is always
1:01going to stay there, which is kind of a
1:03really nice sort of thing to have. Now if
1:06you have any
1:07unread notifications, you also have this
1:09separator. Because I've just read that
1:10previous notification,
1:11you'll see there's nothing here, but if I
1:13go in here, mark it as unread, and then go
1:15to this tab,
1:16you'll see that it appears in both tabs. So
1:18this is a really nice quality of life
1:20improvement,
1:21essentially you can filter the
1:22notifications you've already seen and not
1:25seen. And again,
1:25here once you mark it as red, it disappears
1:27from this list. So you can sort of use it
1:29as a way of
1:30triaging this notification tool. If you're
1:32a server admin or maybe you have a lot of
1:34extracts, this is
1:35a nice way of getting to those extracts
1:37really quickly if they're causing issues.
1:38Now the other
1:40thing you can do is actually this little
1:42gear here on the top right hand side will
1:45take you straight
1:46to a settings page that will show you how
1:47to control your notifications. So let's
1:49just take
1:50a look at that. Let's hit that control gear
1:52here. And it takes us directly to our
1:54settings page for
1:56our account, you can actually get to this
1:57another way. I'll show you that in a second
1:59. But you'll
1:59see here that there's this notifications
2:02area, this is nice and new. So you can
2:04essentially
2:05change where you receive notifications. Let
2:07's say you don't want to be notified on
2:10Tableau for
2:10certain things. Let's say I don't want to
2:12be notified on comments, flow runs, all I
2:14want to
2:15be notified on Tableau is the extract job.
2:17So I can essentially choose those settings
2:20and deselect the
2:21comments there and mentions and then hit
2:23save changes. And so the only thing I'll
2:24actually see
2:25in this bell on Tableau itself will be
2:27those extracts runs failing or succeeding
2:30or whatever.
2:31Now the more practical thing is actually to
2:33do it this way around. So to keep your
2:35mentions and
2:36everything on Tableau, but actually just
2:39choose to be specifically, choose to be
2:41specifically
2:42notified about flow runs and extract jobs
2:44as well. And webhooks also come through by
2:47email,
2:48essentially, this is a feature that's
2:49required because webhooks typically need to
2:52notify you
2:52some way. So there's no ability yet for
2:55them to notify you in Tableau. But I'm sure
2:57that's probably
2:58maybe coming in the future. And then once
3:00you've made your changes, you hit your save
3:01changes,
3:02and that's pretty much it. That's
3:03everything changed. And you can see that
3:05this has been
3:05successful. You've got this little toast
3:07thing that came up there disappeared before
3:09I could get
3:10to it. But nonetheless, that's pretty much
3:12it. It's a nice small quality of life
3:13improvement,
3:14but hopefully makes it easier to get to the
3:16notifications that matter really, really
3:18quickly.
3:18If you've enjoyed this video, be sure to
3:20check out some of the other videos in the
3:222021.1 playlist
3:24I've got here on YouTube. And also on my
3:25website, actually, if I just go to Tableau
3:2710.com, I'll show
3:28you how that looks. I think it's actually a
3:31better place to sort of browse all these
3:33new features. So
3:33if you go to the website and just hit this
3:35big banner on the homepage, you can see
3:37that all the
3:38previous videos are here on the right hand
3:39side. So you can just sort of click through
3:41these and
3:42it's just much easier and nicer to sort of
3:44see them all in one place. It's essentially
3:46the same
3:47content as in YouTube. It's no different.
3:48It's exactly the same videos just in there.
3:50I think a better place to watch them. So
3:52check that out as well if you haven't had a
3:53chance.
3:54But otherwise, thanks for tuning in and I
4:01'll catch you in the next video.
There is now a more centralised notification experience with additional options to control where you get notifications.
