View Data Models in Worksheets : Tableau 2025.1 - 8 Language Audio Track

0:00In Tableau 25.

0:011 you can now view the data model inside of your sheet.

0:04Now this is a very very small but really important huge update.

0:09Let me show you how this works then you'll understand why it's useful.

0:12I've connected up to the bookshop library's

0:15demo dataset.

0:15I'll put a link to this in the description.

0:17You can download it from Tableau's website.

0:19It's a good example of a data model that they have set up in advance.

0:23If I go and edit the data source you'll see the data model is quite complex relative to

0:28what you're typically used to inside a tableau and it has pretty much everything going on all the way from a uh physical table with a join in there and we've even got unions happening for sales files that are happening over

0:40Multiple years we've got Q1, 2, 3, and 4.

0:43So this is a very very uh busy data model.

0:46Now if I go back to the worksheet, I'm just going to do a very very simple chart.

0:51I'm going to bring in

0:52uh the titles from uh my books table so this just has the names of each book and what I want to do is find out how many libraries stock this particular book.

1:02If I'm a promoter I want to make sure that my book is available in the library so people can read it and get the word out.

1:07So I'll go ahead to the library profile and I'll just go ahead and bring library onto detail.

1:13Now when I put it here you get these dots here that kind of show you the number of libraries.

1:17Each of these is a distinct sort of library.

1:19If you hover over them, it tells you which one it is.

1:22But what I

1:22want is the count distinct of libraries so that I count the distinct number of libraries and then I can go ahead put that on text and there you go I have my very very basic chart I can then go sort this from greatest to smallest

1:34go to the bottom.

1:35Actually I can sort it from smallest to largest and then say okay look I'm gonna send these four libraries a free book so they just they stock my book and you know people start to read it.

1:43So it's a really basic analysis now

1:46Let's say you dispute this numbers.

1:47Let's say you get an email saying, hey, look, I think we actually have 10 books in this library.

1:52You might then start to wonder, well, what's going on here?

1:54And you'll maybe click on this little cell and you'll go and view the raw data.

1:58And then you'll get this view, which just gives you the number.

2:01And then if you go to the library profile table, you'll get something that looks like this.

2:05So you have the title and then you have all the individual libraries.

2:07Now

2:08The thing about this is that it's built in a slightly different way because you're using the data model.

2:13So how do you actually diagnose how that data model is driving this answer?

2:18In order to do that, you need this new feature.

2:20You can go ahead here to worksheet.

2:22and go down here to this new option that says view data model.

2:25When you click on that, you get this view.

2:27Now this view initially shows you the whole data model as a starter you can expand it

2:32You can move it around, it's a modal window, it's really nice.

2:35But here's a really nice thing.

2:36You can go ahead on the top right here and click this hide unused tables.

2:40And it gets rid of everything that's not being used in this sheet.

2:44So even though I drag the titles from my book table

2:47and I went and got the distinct libraries from my library profile.

2:51Tabo has used the additions and catalogs to real to create that relationship all the way through.

2:57So if I'm diagnosing any potential issue with numbers, I know I need to go and check and make sure that my relationships in the edition and catalogue all the way down to library profile.

3:06are all doing the right thing.

3:08Now this is a very small change but it's huge because for the first time you can actually see what the data model is doing on a worksheet basis.

3:16Before the only view you had was this view and you had to really abstract this understanding in your

3:21your head to kind of understand what was going on.

3:24I swear by the data model I think using joins and unions are you know a thing of the past.

3:29Unions make sense but really if you're doing unions you should really do that work upstream inside of a warehouse or write a better SQL query to bring it all.

3:36in relationships to me are fundamental part of Tableau.

3:40I'm going to be doing a series with Kirk Monroe.

3:42We're we're making something to really try and create the masterclass for the data model.

3:46But until then, I just love the updates that Tableau keeps pushing to the data model.
