Understanding Tableau Cloud Upgrades: All You Need to Know!

If you use Tableau Cloud, that upgrade message is your earliest clue a new release is coming - and the new features are already live in web edit.

You don't trigger Tableau Cloud upgrades yourself - Tableau notifies you beforehand and confirms with an in-app message once your instance is already on the new version.
Check your current version via the top-right question mark, then About Tableau (for example 24.2.0).
Cloud upgrades roll out across pods in sequence, and only once all pods are updated does Tableau Desktop get pushed out, so the Cloud message is an early signal a release is about a week or two away.
New features are already usable in the web authoring (web edit) experience as soon as the Cloud message appears - you don't need to wait for Desktop.
From 24.2, some features are cloud/web-authoring only, including Viz Extensions accessible from the Marks pane.

0:06And you're probably wondering, but hey, I haven't heard anything from Tableau about the new release.

0:11Well, in this video I'm going to explain why that is.

0:14As ever, let's get started.

0:15Okay, so this message comes up every time you upgrade on Tableau Cloud.

0:19As a matter of technicality, you don't do the upgrade.

0:22Tableau will send a message before the upgrade telling you that they're going to do it.

0:26And when it's done, you get this message.

0:28And what this actually means is that your Tableau Cloud instance that you are part of has already been upgraded to the new version.

0:35You know that by hitting close on this message

0:38And if you go to the very top right hand side and hit the question mark and you select Tableau Help, actually, no, you don't select Tableau Help, you select about Tableau, you'll get this message here, 24.

0:50Is essentially the version.

0:51So in this particular cloud instance, I already have it.

0:54Now it rolls out across the different pods.

0:57The pods are essentially locations where Tableau Cloud is managed from

1:02These update in some sort of sequence and essentially when all of the pods are up to date, that's when the Tableau desktop and Tableau files can get pushed out to everyone else.

1:13That typically happens after Tableau Cloud is up to date.

1:16So if you use Tableau Cloud, a big clue about when the Tableau release is coming is roughly a week or two before you'll see this message on Tableau Cloud saying, hey, the features are available.

1:26Now you might think but hey I can't access these features just yet, but that's not actually true because if you use WebEdit, well all those features are already there.

1:35So if I go ahead and hit close here

1:37And we just go to let's go to my export tab.

1:41I like to go to the export tab because it's an easy point of reference.

1:44You can select new here, and if we select workbook, you'll go into a particular workbook.

1:48And you'll get a little option for a connect data interface.

1:52You can choose any data source that's already available.

1:55I'm just going to choose one, this sample superstore one here, right here

2:00It says live, but it's actually just an Excel file available on the cloud.

2:04And you can see that I just have what is the normal web edit.

2:09Now, a big thing about this release, 24.

2:122, specifically

2:13is that a lot of the features are going to be on cloud only.

2:18By cloud I only mean this web authoring experience.

2:21So Tableau uses the term

2:22web altering quite often to distinct between the desktop version, the one that you install on your computer, versus the web version, this experience that I'm seeing here.

2:32And over the years they've actually been updating this to be

2:35as close to the desktop version as possible and in a lot of their marketing actually for the last two years they've only ever used this during their demos.

2:42And so

2:43If I go into this particular release, let's go ahead and build like a very, very basic chart.

2:48We'll go ahead and build subcategory on rows and we'll go ahead and look for sales and put that on columns.

2:53You'll see that we get a basic bar chart, nothing new.

2:55But if I go to the marks pane

2:57You'll see that I have the capability for Viz Extensions.

3:00That's because Viz Extensions is new in 24.

3:03Go ahead and hit add extension, and you'll see that this is alive and kicking.

3:07It's pretty much up to date, and all the features that come in 24.

3:12I just wanted to make this video now to show people that sequence because I don't think that sequence is well known, but if you know the sequence then if you already have Tablet Cloud.

3:20You can go ahead and start playing with some of the new features in the web altering experience.

3:24And just bear in mind that some of these experiences will only be available in the web.

Tableau Cloud shows an 'upgrade complete' message before any official release announcement, and that message is your earliest signal you can already start using new features in web authoring, ahead of Desktop.

From 24.2 onward, some functionality is only available in the web authoring experience, not Desktop. Viz Extensions is one example, accessed via the Marks pane and the Add Extension option, so don't assume everything you see on Cloud will appear identically on Desktop.
Build as normal, then look for what's new 2:43

Standard chart-building in web edit looks unchanged, but check less obvious areas like the Marks pane for new capabilities that have shipped with the release - in this case Viz Extensions.

Tableau's marketing and demos increasingly favour the web authoring interface, which has been converging with Desktop's functionality over recent years.
