Tableau 2023.1 finally gives us dynamic axis titles, a long-overdue quality-of-life win, though I wish it went one step further.

Dynamic axis titles let you bind an axis title to a parameter value via Edit Axis, so the title updates as the selection changes
Using a numerical (integer) parameter instead of a text parameter loads slightly faster
The feature only works cleanly when measures share the same unit, as Tableau still won't remember separate number formatting per axis

0:02is out and we're looking at a new feature,

0:04dynamic access titles.

0:06What I've gone ahead and done is I've

0:08created a parameter just for this.

0:10So if I go ahead and right click on the

0:11parameter, you can see it's right here.

0:13If I show the parameter, it's essentially

0:15just got three items, sales, profit and

0:17discount.

0:18You might think this is a text based

0:20parameter, but it's actually a numerical

0:22parameter

0:22with integers. These actually load a little

0:25bit faster than the text parameters. That's

0:27a little

0:27quick tip there. So you can see I've got

0:29three values. What I'm going to do with

0:31this is I'm

0:31going to quickly build a chart. In this

0:33particular case, I've already gone ahead

0:35and created a metric

0:37which basically checks that parameter. If I

0:39just go ahead and make this larger so you

0:41can see,

0:42essentially it checks that parameter and

0:44when the value is one, it gives the sales.

0:47When it's two,

0:47it's profit. Then three, then discount. And

0:49that's essentially what's happening here.

0:51It's

0:51essentially corresponding to these values

0:52here on the right hand side. So when I go

0:54ahead and

0:55bring that in, you can see that it's now

0:57there. And if I bring subcategory into

0:59columns, just so

1:00you can see that as I switch between these,

1:03you can see that it's changing the values.

1:05But the

1:06problem we have here is that the axis title

1:08is not changing. Those keen of you will

1:10have noticed that

1:11here it just says metric because our

1:13measure is called metric. What this new

1:16feature allows us

1:17to do is to right click on the axis, edit

1:19the axis, and now in this little drop down,

1:22you can

1:22see that we can actually use one of these

1:24values. One of them is going to be custom

1:26which we can just

1:27use and type. But if I select metric, it's

1:30actually going to use the value of the

1:32parameter

1:33in place of the axis title. So now when I

1:35select that, it says discount, then sales,

1:39and then

1:39profit. Really, really nice feature. Now I

1:42sort of wish Tableau would have just gone

1:45that little

1:46extra mile and given us an independent axis

1:48for each of these as well so that I don't

1:51have to

1:51fight with the formatting of the axis

1:53alongside the switching of the axis. So

1:55what I would have

1:56loved this to have done is respect or

1:59remember the different number formatting

2:01for each of the axis

2:03so that I could use this to do that. If you

2:05're going to want to do that, let's say for

2:08example

2:09here I've got discount which is a

2:10percentage and profit which isn't.

2:13Unfortunately, there's no real

2:14way around that. You're still going to have

2:16to use the old hacks to do that. But if you

2:17've got,

2:18for example, sales and profit where the

2:20values are going to be in the same unit,

2:22that's totally fine.

2:49the other way this feature works is if you

2:52've got a single value column. And in my

2:55head I was like,

2:56what is a single value column? And you know

2:58, Taobao's documentation can be a little bit

3:00weird

3:00sometimes. But I'll just go ahead and show

3:02you. A single value column is essentially a

3:04column with

3:05only one value in the entire spread of the

3:07data. So what this really means is this. I

3:10can create

3:10a field and I'll call this field. And in

3:13there I'll just put this value, call this

3:16single value.

3:17Okay. And so you'll see I've created a

3:19field, it's got single value, hit apply,

3:21hit okay. Now that's

3:23gone over here on the left hand side. So

3:25you can just see it's highlighted in blue.

3:27If I right

3:28click edit my axis and I go back to that

3:30dropdown, you'll now see that it gives me

3:32two options.

3:33It splits it out into parameters, which is

3:35what I saw before, metric, profit bin and

3:37top customers.

3:38But now looking at the data set sample EU

3:41Superstore, you can see that field that I

3:43just created. And because this has a single

3:46value in it, a single value, it shows up.

3:49Subcategory and category don't show up. All

3:52these other dimensions don't show up

3:54because they don't

3:54have a single value. So what this really

3:57means is you can then create fields in your

4:00data set here

4:01on the left that you can then use as labels

4:02. Just another bit of flexibility that

4:04allows you to work

4:05with this feature. But that's pretty much

4:07it in a nutshell. That's the feature in a

4:09nutshell.

4:09Super simple. I know this has been asked

4:11for for a long time. So I have to say this

4:13is another

4:13quality of life improvement that's coming

4:15out from Tableau. Long overdue. I just wish

4:18it went

4:18that little extra mile. But nonetheless, it

Rollup

Tableau 2023.1 lets you bind an axis title to a value that changes dynamically, either via a parameter or a single-value field, so the title updates automatically instead of staying stuck on the measure's static name.

Tim uses a parameter that switches a chart between sales, profit and discount via a calculated metric field. The axis title previously stayed fixed at the metric field's name even as the displayed measure changed.

Know the number-formatting limitation 1:40

Tableau doesn't remember separate number formatting per axis, so this only works cleanly when the measures you're switching between share the same unit (e.g. sales and profit). Mixing a percentage measure like discount with a non-percentage one still requires the older formatting workarounds.
Use a single-value column as an alternative label source 2:50

As a separate option, you can create a field that holds only one value across the entire dataset. Any such single-value field appears in the same Edit Axis dropdown, alongside parameters, giving you another way to source a dynamic-looking axis label.
Why only single-value fields qualify 3:41

Regular dimensions like subcategory or category don't show up in that dropdown because they contain many values; only fields with exactly one value across the whole dataset qualify as label sources, which is why you'd deliberately create one for this purpose.

Worth Knowing

The feature won't give each switched measure its own independent axis formatting, so mixed-unit measures (e.g. percentage vs currency) still need the old formatting hacks.
Numerical/integer parameters load a touch faster than text parameters for this use case.
A 'single-value column' just means a field with one value repeated across every row — not a natively obvious concept, so you may need to create one deliberately.

Use It When
