How to change Column header limit in Tableau Desktop 2019.4 and newer

0:00A new feature in 2019.4 is the removal of a

0:06limitation to the number of column headers

0:08you can have in a table.

0:10I've built a very simple table here in

0:12Tableau and if I go to the analysis pane at

0:15the top

0:15and I go to table layout then advanced, you

0:19'll see that it opens up these table options

0:22.

0:22Now in 2019.3, the limitation for this is

0:26set to 16.

0:28So you can't actually have more than 16

0:31header values in your columns or rows.

0:34If I switch over to Tableau 2019.4, you'll

0:37see that this limitation and the exact same

0:40menu has been increased to 50.

0:42So you can now have up to 50 levels in your

0:46table.

0:47And this essentially means that everything

0:50that you see here in the headers pane will

0:52actually get its own individual column.

0:55Let me just show you what that looks like.

0:57So if I go to the table layout and I set

1:00this to a very low number, let's set this

1:04to three

1:05for now and hit apply.

1:07As soon as I add a fourth item to this

1:10table, you'll see that it starts to conc

1:13atenate the

1:14fields.

1:15So subcategory and category get concaten

1:18ated into one field.

1:20If I go to this option and I change this to

1:23four, hit apply, you'll see that that conc

1:27atenation

1:28is removed.

1:29So essentially the limit of the number of

1:31columns you can actually have fully

1:33displaying

1:34is now 50 rather than 16.
