0:00In 22.4 in Tableau Prep, you can now just
0:03replace an input by dragging the file on
0:05top of the existing connection.
0:08It's a small quality of life improvement,
0:09but it's so valuable. Let me show you how
0:11it works. Let's get started.
0:13Before we get stuck in, just one quick
0:14favor. 82% of the people watching this
0:17video in the last year aren't subscribed to
0:20the channel.
0:20And just to show you some context, nearly
0:22half of my subscribers came from this last
0:24year's worth of content.
0:26And if you look at how many views and how
0:27much time people are spending, I'm sure it
0:29's creating value somewhere.
0:31So if you really appreciate the content or
0:32would like to see even more of it at a
0:34better, higher quality standard, hit the
0:36sub button and enjoy the rest of the video.
0:38So here we are in a prep flow. You can see
0:40that I already have errors here. I've got a
0:42file that is missing.
0:43I essentially broke this flow just to show
0:45this example. This is the default workflow
0:47that you get with Tableau Prep when you
0:49open it up.
0:50It's the very first Superstore flow. Now
0:52here you can see we've already got a
0:53connection that's broken.
0:55So what I'm going to do is I'm going to go
0:56and get the exact same file that I moved to
0:58another location.
1:00In this case, let's assume that I'm new to
1:01the organization. I don't have access to
1:03this file.
1:04So what I'm going to do is I'm first going
1:06to go and get my finder window just so we
1:08can bring up the relevant data source on
1:10screen.
1:11You can see here I've got this returns data
1:12set.
1:13So all I'm going to do is I'm going to drag
1:14it into my connection window here on the
1:16left and you'll see that Tableau
1:18automatically adds it to the window.
1:20And you can see here I have a returns.xlsx
1:22file here and I have the returns table just
1:25here.
1:26And it's going to replace this top one over
1:28here. Now what I could have done, I could
1:30have fixed this by editing this connection,
1:32referencing the new file.
1:33But what I've done is I've just brought it
1:34in again to show you this basic feature. I
1:37can go ahead and drag it and I can replace
1:39it.
1:40There's this little icon here that says
1:41replace. I drop it on top and now Tableau
1:43will go and replace everything.
1:45You'll see the errors disappear just like
1:47magic. So nice, so useful. Great quality of
1:50life improvement. Love to see it.
1:52Now there's a couple of other subtle
1:53changes. If you're familiar with Altrix,
1:55you'll notice that Tableau prep has got
1:57these curvy lines.
1:58And this is part of a feature set that I
1:59don't fully understand the impact of until
2:02I start using this.
2:04It'll probably take me a couple of weeks of
2:05using prep frequently to understand what
2:07these changes are.
2:08But if I go ahead and bring up the notes
2:10for this particular capability, it's
2:12essentially a UI improvement.
2:15Let me put it up on screen here so you can
2:16see what I'm looking at. I actually covered
2:19this in my coming soon video for this
2:20particular release.
2:22Tableau prep makes the process of building
2:24a flow to clean and shape your data
2:26incredibly visual with a revamped flow edge
2:30graph.
2:31I don't know what that means. Flow edge
2:33graph. I'll come to that in a second.
2:35We are reducing visual distractions that
2:37arise when the flow graph becomes larger
2:39and more complicated.
2:41These changes will provide you with a more
2:42legible, flexible and playful experience
2:44when creating flows.
2:46I think part of that changes the curvy
2:47lines, but I think more importantly, if you
2:50ever work with a really, really large flow,
2:52I can't show you any examples.
2:53I do have large flows, but their client
2:54works. I can't show them to you.
2:57Tableau prep gets a bit funny in the edges
2:59and the extremes. I wonder if this tries to
3:03resolve those issues. I wonder if it
3:05resolves the jittery, janky behaviour
3:07sometimes we get.
3:08I'm not entirely sure, but I think that's
3:09what they're trying to resolve in this
3:11particular release.
3:13Let me know what you think they're going to
3:14solve in the comments below. If you know
3:16the answer, also put them in the comments
3:17below. I'd love to hear them.
3:19That's it for Tableau prep in this release.
3:21I've actually got another video about Lock
3:22Shark for Tableau prep. That's a separate
3:24video.
3:25It deserves a certain air time. Thanks for
3:27watching and I'll catch you in the next
3:28video.
