0:00Now I've been saying for a long time that
0:02web editing is going to get much much
0:04better than the desktop experience
0:05One thing holding that back has been
0:07formatting and in 22.2
0:08Tableau starting to address that trend by
0:11bringing formatting capabilities to workshe
0:13ets. Let's get stuck in
0:15Okay. So now we're here in web edit
0:18I've just gone straight to Superstore work
0:19book and I'm editing this in web edit now
0:21I'm just gonna check my notes because the
0:23formatting features here
0:24They are hinting that there's going to be
0:25more in the future
0:26but the ones have specifically brought our
0:29lines text borders and
0:30Dividers and we'll sort of dig into the
0:32detail of that as we go through but in
0:34essence
0:35Here I am on a sheet if I right-click in
0:37any white space select format worksheet
0:40Over here on the left hand on the right
0:42hand side even we get the formatting pane
0:45and this is essentially what we've got
0:46So we've got fonts style lines interactive
0:48tools and borders so we can change a couple
0:51of things here
0:52We can go into each of these section and it
0:54sort of expands the capabilities. It shows
0:57us some of the
0:58Capabilities that we've sort of been used
1:00to but this is a new design for all of this
1:03We've never really had this on the right
1:04hand side
1:05Typically this has lived on the left hand
1:07side
1:07And so this might sort of hints with a
1:09redesign of the formatting capabilities
1:12because you would expect that Tableau wants
1:14Uniformity across its entire platform. So
1:18desktop
1:18I think we'll be getting these web-based
1:20features and as we move closer and closer
1:22to sort of a more parallel world where
1:25desktop and
1:25Web editor the same I think this will be
1:28the interface that will win out
1:30So if you also see these web edit changes
1:32and you think are they suck I prefer the
1:34desktop changes
1:35It's worth speaking up now and letting
1:36Tableau know that feedback because this
1:38this is the way they're heading
1:40This is just going to be the way that
1:41everything works so you can edit a bunch of
1:43things here
1:43this is really really good to see and
1:45What is interesting about this is that this
1:48pane sort of stays open?
1:49I've already got another sheet open and if
1:51I go to that
1:52You can see that the formatting pane stays
1:54open and it changes context to match what I
1:56'm looking at
1:57So as I switch between these two the
1:59settings change
1:59and this is actually quite nice because
2:01again formatting has been one of those
2:03frustrating things stopping people from
2:05going to
2:05web edit and
2:07Dashboard editing is going to specifically
2:09the thing that sort of I think will really
2:11really unlock this
2:12I think that's coming in the future so
2:14hopefully this year will see Tableau fully
2:16realize this feature set and
2:18Bring it to parity with desktop, so what I
2:20'm going to do. I'm just going to go back to
2:22This first tab here, and we're just going
2:25to play around with this
2:25I'm going to have to keep my face to the
2:27left hand side
2:27And we'll just go around and just see what
2:29the formatting options can do so the first
2:31one at the top
2:32We've got fonts which obviously changes
2:33everything for the specific worksheet
2:35So I can go ahead and change the font and
2:37again
2:38It's using a familiar sort of style that we
2:40've become used to I can change the
2:41background fill and if we
2:44Change that you can see that that changes
2:45the the background fill across everything
2:47actually which is kind of nice
2:49I'm choosing some horrible colors here. I'm
2:51just trying to sort of see the capabilities
2:53What is interesting is that the formatting
2:55at the very top is generic across the whole
2:57worksheet?
2:57And then when you go into the specifics you
3:00can see the line capabilities
3:02So if I select here grid lines you can see
3:04that they're all available if I select the
3:06very top
3:07I can actually bring a drop down that
3:09giving me a little bit more control for
3:10horizontal and vertical so at the moment
3:13vertical is off
3:14I can go to the top switch it on and
3:17Change how that looks as well so we can
3:20change things to be a little bit more
3:21interesting
3:22And I like this interface where we actually
3:24get the thickness spelled out for you in
3:27pixels
3:27That's a good sort of consistency change
3:29and what I can't sometimes see sometimes
3:33What I really struggle with formatting is
3:34trying to understand which formatting is
3:36going to change where I've actually just
3:37done a video that
3:38Explains what happens when formatting gets
3:41stuck and what would be really nice here is
3:43for Tableau to highlight the part of the
3:45chart
3:45That's actually changing when you do this
3:47because sometimes it's not enough just to
3:49be able to see things
3:49You've got to actually go choose a really
3:51bold color to then see what's going on
3:54So what I tend to do is I tend to choose
3:56like the darkest of blacks
3:58Then I can actually see what's changing
4:00because before the color that those chosen
4:02was so subtle that you wouldn't have seen
4:04it with the background
4:05Color that I've selected because I chose
4:06the dotted line and again
4:08I'm just working off you know, so basically
4:10what I think is going to work in my head
4:11But it's very very clear that you can't
4:13even see that on this particular background
4:15And it's not until I selected black that
4:17you realize okay. This is actually what I'm
4:19editing now
4:20Let's actually start to dial this back in
4:22and you can actually start to sort of make
4:23things work
4:25And this is what a lot of people do they'll
4:27sort of sit there get everything just just
4:29right and then at the very last minute
4:31They'll come in and then try and find the
4:33color set or the appropriate sort of
4:35setting that really really works for
4:36Them in that setup, so I'll go back to one
4:38pixel there, and that's really nice
4:40So that's gridlines you get the same
4:42settings for horizontal and vertical and I
4:44like that you get this sort of nice
4:46High-level view and if you go over to the
4:48multiple
4:49selection of the top you're actually going
4:51to change the horizontal and the vertical
4:53and
4:54The cool thing about that is if you just go
4:56ahead and make a single change what it does
4:58is it overrides
4:59Anything that you've set up so and be very
5:02very careful with that setting if you then
5:04go and touch this having just spent time
5:06And energy on vertical and horizontal. I
5:07think you can undo and but in essence just
5:10be careful about that now zero lines
5:12Are just zero lines is kind of self-explan
5:15atory
5:15I don't need to explain that but again
5:17these are just lines are gonna have the
5:18same formatting the interactive controls
5:20I say these are things like legends filters
5:22highlighted and parameters. They have their
5:25own font control so they're again standard
5:27izing this
5:27I like that all of those have the same
5:30Sort of control sometimes you get into the
5:32situation where a filter and parameter have
5:34different formatting
5:35I like that they're just unified under one
5:37roof
5:38So that's really nice to see and if I go
5:40back to borders
5:41And this is actually kind of nice so we've
5:43got this new interface element for borders
5:45you can have them linked
5:47So this little padlock means when you make
5:49a change to one the other will change as
5:51well
5:52So the pain and header are going to make
5:53the same changes here when you unlink them
5:55you can make
5:55Independent changes and we've also got the
5:58slider that we started to see across the
6:00tableau interface this little toggle which
6:01basically switches things on
6:03And off and as you switch them on and off
6:04you can see that things collapse and move
6:06around as well
6:07So that's again a really nice thing and it
6:09's a little confusing
6:10It's a little new, but I do like the new
6:12setup
6:13I like this new direction because it it
6:14streamlines where things are and it makes
6:17it much much more obvious
6:18What's going to happen that one thing
6:20missing is that a highlighter showing me
6:22exactly what part of the chart is going to
6:23change?
6:24Because I think that's still a little bit
6:25hard to do a bit like you get in
6:26calculation assistance where you can see
6:28the direction
6:29In which calculations are working when you
6:32do that okay, so that's the dividers and
6:34lines
6:35It's a pretty nice set of changes, but yeah
6:38these are small steps towards a bigger
6:40change
6:40I think to make formatting across the board
6:42both on web editor and desktop a little bit
6:44more consistent and easier to follow
6:46Thanks for watching and I'll catch you in
6:47the next video
6:48Yeah
6:50You
