Tableau .TDE files are getting deprecated in March 2023

The Tableau data extract is being deprecated in March 2023, but for most of us this is really just the end of confusing .TDE versus Hyper terminology.

Part of Tableau Key Concepts
  • The .TDE format will no longer be supported from the 2023.1 release in March 2023, with the Hyper file becoming the only extract type Tableau produces.
  • People loosely say "Tableau data extract" to mean a .TDE, but since version 10.5 (2018) the actual file produced has been a .Hyper file, so for most users this change is largely terminology.
  • Server admins can find lingering .TDEs by filtering data sources for the Tableau Data Engine connection type, and from 2022.1 can use Tableau Services Manager commands to block .TDE publishing.
  • Tableau Online users need do little, as Tableau will restrict .TDE publishing from June and auto-convert old files; there is also a conversion script on Tableau's GitHub.
  • Tableau Public likely holds the largest library of old .TDEs, so workbooks built before version 10.5 that haven't been touched are the ones most affected.

For all customers: Starting in March 2023, with the release of 2023.1, all Tableau products (Desktop, Prep, Server, Online, Public) will not be able to read TDE content.

For Tableau Online and Public customers: There is no action needed. Tableau will convert published content for you. Starting in June 2022, we will restrict the ability to publish TDE content to Tableau Online and Public. Starting in June 2022, we will convert all existing TDEs in Public and Online to Hyper.
