Tableau public improved search: New in Tableau 2021.1
Search on Tableau Public received a nice upgrade in 2021.1
- Tableau Public search now shows visualisation previews and splits results into vizzes on the left and authors on the right
- The search reads titles more meaningfully and ranks author matches by first name plus surname criteria
- Using consistent titles or hashtags (like Makeover Monday) makes your work far easier to find and group
- You can web edit a published viz to inspect how someone built it, a handy way to learn techniques
- Web edit in Tableau Public was slated for 2021.1 but has been delayed, while sorting search by recency or popularity remains on the wishlist
0:00Hey, it's Tim here. Over the last week,
0:01Tableau Public is starting to get some of
0:03the features
0:03that were supposed to be released in 2021.1
0:06. The first most notable one is the search
0:09experience.
0:09So I don't know if you've ever used the
0:11Tableau Public search fields, it's actually
0:13been a bit of
0:13a pain to use and it's never really sort of
0:15yielded valuable results in the past
0:17because
0:18it didn't really search things that made
0:20sense. So now that's been improved, we're
0:21going to go
0:22ahead and try it out here on the very top
0:24right hand side. So if I go over here to
0:26the top right
0:26hand side, I just point an arrow to where I
0:28'm looking. You can see there's a little
0:29search icon
0:30on the top right hand side. And if we just
0:32go ahead and click on it, it takes us to
0:33the search
0:34field. And what I'm going to do is I'm
0:35going to search for one of my own visitors,
0:37this is the
0:37sort of easiest way to do this. So I'm just
0:39going to search Donald Trump. Unfortunately
0:41, yes, I'm
0:42bringing this guy up again, Donald Trump
0:45tweets. This was actually a makeover Monday
0:47for a while.
0:49And if I just go ahead and search that, you
0:52'll see that the search experience is
0:54actually now
0:54improved. The first thing you get is you
0:56get a preview of the visualizations, which
0:58is actually
0:58nice to see because it's a very visual
1:00place. So you want to be able to see this
1:02thing. Now,
1:03the thing it does with the searches, it
1:05actually looks at the titles in a little
1:08bit more of a
1:08meaningful way. So let's say there's a make
1:10over Monday and everyone names their visual
1:13izations
1:13in a certain way, this is actually going to
1:15be able to sort of find it for you. Now,
1:17the other
1:17thing it does is it splits it into two
1:19formats. So you've got the visitors on the
1:21left and then
1:21you've got authors on the right. So when I
1:23go over to the authors, it's going to find
1:25everyone who's
1:26called Donald. So it's starting to work a
1:28little bit more like an actual search
1:30engine where it's
1:31using the information to go and
1:33specifically find the thing you're
1:35interested in. So if you wanted
1:36to search, for example, myself, I just
1:38searched my name here, you just want to
1:40find my profile,
1:41you maybe can't find it. It comes up with
1:43not just me, but also my brother who's over
1:46here. So he's
1:46also created a profile and it's basically
1:48using the surname and then it's also using
1:51my first name.
1:52And so the first option here on the left is
1:54the person who meets both of that criteria,
1:56the first name and the last name. The
1:57second one is the person that meets the
1:59second criteria.
2:00And then the third option and everything
2:02else is just everyone else called Tim,
2:03essentially. Okay,
2:04so that's a really cool, nice quality of
2:06life improvement. If you've ever tried to
2:07search for
2:08an author through the search, I can stand
2:10no chance. But now this is really, really
2:12nice.
2:12So if I go back to the business tab, and we
2:14just sort of scroll through this, you'll
2:17notice that,
2:17you know, it has lots of context. So when I
2:19've searched to Tim McGuenna, now it will go
2:23through
2:23my visits. So if I go back to the business
2:25tab, having searched for myself, you'll see
2:28that it
2:28actually just lists my visualization. So it
2:30's kind of interesting because it's
2:33basically ordering
2:34these visits again, in terms of the
2:36priority of the term that you searched. So
2:38first, it's finding
2:39everything that says Tim McGuenna anywhere
2:42in the profile, and then it's going to
2:44other parts of the
2:45profile. And it's basically going on Tim,
2:47and my brother hasn't published anything.
2:49So his is not
2:49sort of appearing in this list. And so you
2:51can sort of start to see how much smarter
2:53it is. Okay,
2:54I go back and I just search, let's say we
2:56want to find this particular viz. And let's
2:59say the
3:00presidential race. Let's see if anyone else
3:04has ever done that on Tableau. And yeah,
3:07there's
3:07actually quite a few people who've done it.
3:09And someone's actually used my design over
3:12here on the
3:12right hand side. And essentially, just what
3:15you can do sometimes you can go in and do a
3:17web edit
3:18on a visualization and see how someone has
3:20created that. So this is actually a really
3:21good way of
3:22sort of seeing that in Anna. So if I keep
3:24scrolling down, you can see other people
3:26have sort of
3:27got titles that have that same thing. And
3:30again, another makeover Monday, and people
3:32are visualizing
3:33in lots of sort of interesting ways. And so
3:35it can, of course, find the one that I
3:37built here
3:37on the left. And again, it's doing that
3:39based on a bunch of other factors. I assume
3:41it's by views,
3:42by likes, and so on and so forth. It's sort
3:46of storing in some way, although this one
3:48over here,
3:49248,000, you'd argue is probably, you know,
3:52should should be a little bit higher, if
3:54that makes sense.
3:55So it's kind of interesting how it arrives
3:57at this conclusion. I don't know if it's
4:00looking
4:00for the exact match of the titles, but it's
4:03starting to work a bit more like a search
4:05engine,
4:05it's actually reasonable to expect to find
4:07something that you want in here. So I'm
4:09hoping
4:10Tableau maybe share a little bit more about
4:11the way the algorithm works so that you
4:13know,
4:13people can tell people, you know, maybe if
4:15you start including hashtags in your visits
4:17,
4:17it's actually a reliable way of finding a
4:19group of visualizations. So if I was to,
4:21for example,
4:22search make over Monday, I think what we'll
4:28find is a whole bunch of things that were
4:32titled make
4:33over Monday in the title, but you can see a
4:35lot of people use the hashtag. So if I was
4:37to go in here
4:38and use the hashtag and hit enter, I
4:41actually need to remove the space and then
4:44hit the search icon.
4:46I think it creates a space if I don't do
4:48that. So here you can see everything titled
4:50make over
4:51Monday in the title, which is a great way
4:52of actually just browsing the wealth of
4:54stuff
4:55that's come in. So if people start naming
4:57their thing in a structured way, then you
4:59can start to
5:00see how this can really, really work. Even
5:02if you have make over Monday somewhere in
5:04the description,
5:04it's still going to put it up in this list,
5:06which is actually really, really nice. And
5:08you can find
5:08things that are sort of really interesting,
5:10really nicely designed items, and really
5:12some things that
5:12would be just difficult to call to stumble
5:14across if you weren't already looking for
5:16it. So I think
5:17this is going to help lots of people, you
5:19know, get their content out to more people
5:21because search
5:22has always been a big bugbear. But imagine
5:24make over Monday's finished, you want to go
5:26see all
5:26the make over Mondays, and you'll be able
5:28to see that I'd love to see the ability to
5:30sort this by
5:31recency. So I'd love you I'd love to be
5:33able to say look, I only want to see things
5:35created in the
5:35last week. So I could go in search make
5:37over Monday from the last week and see what
5:39people are making
5:40if that makes sense, or even be able to
5:43sort the relevance by recency, popularity,
5:46views, all those
5:47kinds of things. I hope that's something
5:49that's in the works coming in the future.
5:50If not, let's
5:51go on the ideas page and add that in as a
5:52suggestion. But that's pretty much it for
5:55this
5:55video. I just wanted to show you that
5:56feature because I think Tableau Public is
5:58getting some
5:58love after a long, long while. I'm not sort
6:00of getting too much attention, valuable
6:02attention.
6:03The other feature we're still waiting on is
6:05actually the ability to do web edit in
6:06Tableau
6:07Public. That was sort of slated for release
6:10when Tableau 21.1 came out, but
6:13unfortunately,
6:13that's been delayed a little bit by the
6:15looks of thing. It was removed from the
6:16announcement page,
6:17so it might be pushed back to a later
6:19release, or it might just be released on
6:21its own back at some
6:23point in the next few months. So let's look
6:24out for that. Thanks for watching. If you
6:26've liked the
6:27video, you know what to do. Be sure to
6:28check out the Tableau Tim website. I've got
6:30a whole playlist
6:31here on 2021.1. It's a really sort of good
6:34place to go look at it. If you just hit
6:36that button on
6:37the home page, it takes you straight to the
6:39playlist and you can see all the other
6:40videos
6:40on this. I'm actually recording this in the
6:43past, so when you go to this, you'll see
6:44more videos
6:45and what's already here. And yeah, I've got
6:48about seven videos on the slate at the
6:50moment to edit.
6:50So by the time you're seeing this, this
6:52list will be much, much more up to date.
6:54And hopefully,
6:55there's a bunch of other playlists here
6:56that you'll also find useful. Going back to
6:58Tableau
6:58functions, level of detail, calcs and LODs
7:01and all that kind of stuff. So
7:03thanks for watching and I'll catch you in
7:11the next video.
The search experience has been given an uplift in Tableau 2021.1 Alongside the planned release for web edit on Tableau Public this is going to be a huge improvement to the experience of finding and following work on Tableau Public.
