Partner connectors & Datorama connector

Tableau 2020.4 lets partners build their own connectors, but installing the Datorama one is a bit of an Easter egg hunt.

  • Tableau 2020.4 introduced partner-built connectors, allowing third parties like Salesforce/Datorama to build their own connectors via Tableau's API rather than relying on native ones.
  • Partner connectors live in the same gallery as dashboard extensions, under a new 'Connectors' section, so finding them is a bit of an Easter egg hunt.
  • Installation is manual: download the .taco file and drag it into the Tableau repository's Connectors folder in your Documents.
  • You must fully quit and reopen Tableau (Command+Q on Mac) for the connector to appear under Connect > More.
  • On first use you may be prompted to install a JDBC driver before the connector works.

Tableau Partners can no build their own custom connectors for Tableau. To show off this feature I’m showing you how the Datorama connector takes advantage of this capability.

Tableau release notes.

Tableau has great connectivity that allows you to visualize data from virtually anywhere. In addition to dozens of built-in connectors for Tableau, you’ll find more connectors built by Tableau partners in the Tableau Extension Gallery(Link opens in a new window). For more information about using partner-built connectors, see Use Partner-Built Connector from the Extension Gallery.https://help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/gallery\_connectors.htm
