How to find *ALL* new features or changes in any release of Tableau
The marketing page never shows everything that changed, so let me reveal the hidden documentation Easter egg that does.
- The Tableau marketing release page only lists headline features, not the full set of new and changed items in a version
- Each Tableau documentation set has a 'What's New' page right at the top of its breadcrumb hierarchy, with separate pages for Desktop/Prep/Online/Server and on-premise Tableau Server
- Navigate Tableau.com via Support, then your product, then 'see all' manuals and guides, and select the correct version on the left to browse older releases right back to version 10.4
- The bottom of each What's New page hides a 'Changed in' section listing depreciations and altered behaviour, useful for diagnosing business-critical issues like changes to backups
- Some features ship quietly to customers for testing and aren't documented until they're formally publicised in a subsequent release
0:00Hey it's Tim here, in today's video I'm
0:01going to show you how to find out
0:03everything new in a new
0:04release of Tableau. Now this might seem
0:06obvious because of course Tableau have this
0:07marketing
0:08page here that goes through all the new
0:10features, but there's always a small detail
0:12here which is it
0:13doesn't show absolutely everything that's
0:15changed as well as what's new in the
0:17current version of
0:18Tableau. So I thought I'd just make a very
0:20quick video on how to do exactly that. So
0:23over here you
0:23can see I'm on the release page and if I go
0:25down you'll see there's a sort of a list of
0:27headline
0:27features, there's also a list of things
0:29that you know resources they've got
0:31available for you to
0:32go check out some of those new features and
0:34then you have a bunch of items here. Now if
0:36I go
0:36through this list and I specifically say
0:39pick a Tableau server, in this particular
0:41list you'll
0:41see everything new with Tableau server and
0:44the thing I'm looking for here is something
0:46called
0:46zero downtime licensing which I know is new
0:49in 2021.1 but isn't necessarily on this
0:52list. Now if
0:53I go through this list and I can obviously
0:55go here to new product activation and you
0:57see they talk
0:58about something called server authorization
1:00to run but this isn't actually what I'm
1:01looking for,
1:02I'm looking for something called zero
1:04downtime licensing. So you're probably
1:05wondering well
1:06Tim how do you know that that's in this
1:08release and so there's actually a sort of a
1:11not well known
1:11page and that is actually in the
1:13documentation itself. If you go to the
1:15documentation for any
1:16version of Tableau it tells you what's new
1:18right at the top of the list. So I'll show
1:20you how to
1:20find that. I've actually got these two
1:22pages open here this is the one for Tableau
1:24desktop
1:25and altering in general across Tableau prep
1:27online and server but then you've also got
1:29this page
1:30which is just for Tableau server which is
1:32specific for on-premise versions of Tableau
1:34server. So how
1:35do you get to these pages? Well the biggest
1:37clue here is in this URL here you can just
1:39see here at
1:40the top I've got this sort of little bread
1:42crumb here and in this breadcrumb in all the
1:44Tableau
1:45server versions they have this hierarchy
1:47that tells you what's new right at the top.
1:49So how
1:50do you get to this page? Well first of all
1:51you have to be familiar with the Tableau
1:53website so
1:53let's go to the Tableau website and let's
1:56not go to my own website let's go to the
1:58Tableau website
1:59and if I can actually type at Tableau.com
2:03obviously go to my own website more than I
2:06go to
2:06Tableau website but if you go here you'll
2:08see there's a nice little link showing us
2:11what's
2:11going on. Let's just go to the just the the
2:13actual home page here and you'll see here
2:16that we find
2:17basically the home page and if I go to
2:19support if I go to products here you'll see
2:21there's a bunch
2:22of things now something I don't like that
2:24they've done is they've sort of buried the
2:26support. The
2:26support used to be up here at the top but
2:28it's now a little bit buried if you go down
2:30here to support
2:31you go to this page and it has a bunch of
2:33resources and information. If you scroll
2:35down and
2:36keep scrolling down you'll see that you
2:38have a bunch of other support links. Go to
2:40the version
2:41that you want let's say I want to go to
2:42Tableau desktop you'll see you arrive at
2:44this page which
2:45is a little bit more detailed and a little
2:46bit more thorough has some getting started
2:49questions
2:49but actually one of the things you want is
2:51the manuals and the guides so I just go
2:53over here to
2:53the see all option and now we're sort of in
2:56this Easter egg hunt very topical for this
2:58time of the
2:58year and now we've got to this page which
3:01again asks us what products we want to use.
3:03Now the key
3:04thing is you want to make sure that you
3:06select your version here on the left hand
3:08side you can
3:08actually go back in time and look at the
3:10manuals for all the previous versions which
3:12is actually
3:12a really really nice thing especially if
3:14you're using an older version maybe even up
3:16to version
3:1710.5 but I've got to tell you Tableau don't
3:19even support that version of Tableau
3:21anymore so if
3:21you're still on that definitely get an
3:23upgrade plan soon. So anyway you'll see
3:25here that you've
3:26got different versions now once you've got
3:28the right versions we're on the current
3:30version you
3:30want to select the most recent sort of list
3:33here so you can see here you get this
3:35additional menu
3:36and in this menu you have this what's new
3:38link when you hit that you actually go to
3:40this list
3:41and this list is the full list of
3:43everything that's been updated and at the
3:46very very very bottom
3:47if I go right down to the bottom I don't
3:49know why this is buried so far this is sort
3:51of where
3:51sometimes they bury bad news like things
3:53that have been depreciated sometimes you
3:55see things
3:56that have been changed in that version so
3:58sometimes this will include things like you
4:00know
4:01not supporting a certain driver or not
4:02doing something by standard but in this
4:04particular
4:05desktop version there isn't anything. If I
4:08go back here and I go to the Tableau server
4:10version let's
4:11just go here to Tableau server on Windows
4:13as an example you'll see there's another
4:14what's new link
4:15click on that and then you'll see this is
4:17specifically everything new in Tableau
4:20server
4:20for this release 2021.1 and you can see
4:23this list is actually quite long and you
4:25know I've got to be
4:26honest it's probably a good reason that
4:28these server features made it into the
4:30marketing on
4:30this page that I started with because they
4:33're not exactly the most thrilling of
4:35features to talk
4:36about but you can see here right at the top
4:37is the one that I was talking about zero
4:39downtime
4:40licensing and that's how I know that zero
4:42downtime licensing has been added to 2021.1
4:46. Now another
4:46thing to be aware of is right at the bottom
4:48of this they have this sort of I think this
4:50is a
4:50cheeky section called changed in 2021.1 and
4:54if you don't scroll to the bottom you won't
4:57realize for
4:58example that the behavior and certain
5:00things in Tableau server has changed and
5:02now listen you don't
5:03need to be well versed in this stuff but if
5:05it's something that's business critical I
5:07think backups
5:07is something that's business critical then
5:10I think you just do need to be aware that
5:11there's a
5:12change here there's something subtle and
5:14normally if the change is substantial they
5:15'll let you know
5:16up front but again if you have some sort of
5:18weird behavior that's doing something maybe
5:20the backups
5:21taking a little less time a little longer
5:23you just want to know why is that and this
5:25might have sort
5:26of the explanation and the reason for that
5:28so this is just a nice place to come to
5:30there's a lot of
5:31stuff in here there's new SAML
5:33configuration keys I mean I don't
5:34understand half this stuff but you
5:36know every so often you'll get a support
5:38ticket and if you check this page you'll
5:40just realize
5:40that actually that's why it's different
5:42because something has changed here and you
5:44can fix these
5:44problems very very quickly okay so that's
5:47basically how to find out what's new in
5:49every single version
5:50of Tableau going all the way back to
5:52version 10.4 it's a bit of an easter egg
5:54hunt I admit that
5:55but if you now know where it is hopefully
5:57you'll be able to find out everything new
5:59in every release
6:00um with each version and now there are also
6:03some cases where features do get released
6:05but they're
6:06not documented anywhere in the
6:07documentation and that is sort of uh sort
6:10of an edge case
6:11essentially what Tableau will do is if they
6:12would like you to test that they will send
6:14you the
6:15documentation links themselves it just won
6:17't appear in this documentation so sometimes
6:20sort
6:20of features get sort of released quietly
6:22essentially and to customers to test them
6:25to make sure they're
6:25stable and rigid enough for you know
6:27everyday enterprise use and then in the
6:29subsequent release
6:30they'll sort of publicize that this has
6:32been added to the version formally if that
6:34makes sense so
6:35that's how to find out everything new in a
6:36Tableau release I just thought I'd do that
6:38video because
6:39it's taking a while to sort of crunch
6:41through the 2021 stuff a lot of it is
6:44generally server
6:45related and I'm still spending time trying
6:47to figure out Einstein analytics and it's
6:49going to
6:49take me a while a little bit so whilst that
6:51's happening I thought I'd give you a
6:52resource so
6:53you can go and find out some of the
6:54information for yourself so you're not kept
6:56waiting for a
6:57video on the topics but of course we will
6:59get to videos on all these things this year
7:01I'm making
7:02the pledge to do videos on all the Tableau
7:03server releases that's something that
7:05everyone has been
7:06asking for so I am going to be spending
7:08some time doing a dedicated video on
7:10everything new on
7:11Tableau server in 2021 so stay tuned for
7:14that in the next couple of weeks it will
7:15take time to get
7:16through but unfortunately that's just the
7:18nature of how this release has gone with
7:20the lack of a
7:20beta okay so thanks for watching if you've
7:22enjoyed this video you know what to do I'll
7:25catch you in
7:25the next video and as always stay tuned and
7:32I'll catch you soon.
