0:00Hey Tim here, in 21.4 you can finally edit
0:02published data sources without having to
0:04pull
0:04them down, put them in desktop and update
0:07them. This was a previously a nine step
0:09process. Let
0:09me just show you this documentation from
0:11Tableau about how to do this. If I just
0:14open this up in
0:14another tab you'll see here it's actually a
0:16knowledge base article on how to do this
0:18and it's
0:19a nine step process to actually modify a
0:21published data source. It shouldn't be that
0:23painful and
0:24thankfully in 21.4 that's been now resolved
0:27. You can see here that I have this edit
0:29published data
0:30source or edit data source button here.
0:33When I go ahead and click on that it opens
0:35up a window in
0:36another tab, in this particular case it
0:39opens in another tab and you can edit
0:41pretty much everything
0:42you'd expect to be able to edit. You can
0:44edit the relationships, you can add more
0:46information to the
0:47relationship, for example I can add in
0:49returns here and then I can make sure that
0:52all works.
0:52I can even go to what they're calling a
0:54scratch pad over here where you can test
0:56out the calculations
0:57in that data source. So you can go to the
0:59scratch pad, the scratch pad essentially
1:01allows you to
1:02have a look at that data source. So in this
1:03case because this published data source is
1:05an extract
1:06it's just pulling the extract one more time
1:08before I go to my scratch pad. I should
1:10have left it as a
1:11live connection actually for this video but
1:13nonetheless I just have to wait for it
1:15because
1:15Tableau Online is a cute product. There we
1:17go, we're in there the extract's working
1:19and now we're
1:19in a scratch pad where we can basically
1:21just test out this calculations and
1:23anything we want to do.
1:25We can even modify calculations so if you
1:27go in here and edit this calculation here
1:29you can see
1:30that this is set. We could say the prior is
1:32two years maybe, hit okay and now when you
1:34've done
1:35all your changes you're pretty much happy
1:36with everything. You've gone back to the
1:38data source
1:38column and everything is sort of working as
1:40expected. You publish this change back up
1:43and
1:43it will essentially publish it over the
1:45existing ones and once that's done you're
1:47pretty much good
1:48to go. That change then gets pushed to
1:50everything that's connected to that
1:51published data source.
1:52So this is good because previously the
1:54workflow used to have to be that you open
1:56up another tab
1:57in desktop, pull the data source down, rep
1:59ublish it back up and that was a bit of a
2:01painful process.
2:02With this you can essentially just have
2:04Tableau Server open, edit it and do the
2:06changes as
2:07expected. So there's not really much to
2:09show here because it works exactly as you'd
2:10expect.
2:11It's sort of one of those things you wish
2:12had been there all along but it's finally
2:14here in 21.4.
2:16so go ahead and check it out. Thanks for
2:17watching this video and I'll catch you in
2:19the next one.
