Coming soon in Tableau 2021 4
21.4 is a real hodgepodge of features, but copy-and-paste in dashboards finally arriving feels like the iPhone getting copy-and-paste all over again.
- Virtual connections and centralised row level security work in unison: you create a connection centrally on Tableau Server and then layer security policies to control who sees which rows.
- You can now edit and rename published data sources directly in the web authoring interface on Tableau Online or Server, avoiding the old workflow of downloading to Desktop and republishing.
- Copy and paste in dashboards is limited to images, text boxes and web page containers across dashboards and Desktop/Online/Server, but does not yet cover charts or buttons (which still use duplicate).
- The Tableau Exchange is essentially a rebrand of the extension gallery, now housing extensions, connectors and accelerators (former dashboard starters from the Lyntia acquisition), and is already live.
- Map layers now support multiple data sources, letting you build a single map from disparate datasets without first joining them into one data source.

0:00Hey it's Tim here. 21.4 is coming soon.
0:02Tableau have updated the page to tell us
0:04what's coming
0:05in this new release, so let's get stuck
0:07into these features and find out what's
0:08coming soon.
0:09Okay so the coming soon page is live, I'll
0:11put it up on screen so you can go and check
0:13this out for
0:13yourself. It's also in the description so
0:15you can go ahead and click it, skip this
0:17video and just go
0:18read it for yourself if you want to, but I
0:19'm going to talk through these as quickly as
0:21I possibly
0:22can just to give you a very high overview
0:24of what's going on. Now if I scroll down,
0:27this is
0:27sort of interesting because as these
0:29releases sort of start to come, there seems
0:31to be something
0:32always new with the coming soon pages.
0:34Normally we get some sort of announcement
0:36of the actual
0:36version here, but it just says coming soon.
0:39No release date as ever, but that's to be
0:41expected.
0:41So if we just do a quick rundown, we have
0:43virtual connections, connected apps, ask
0:46data and slack
0:47integration, centralized row level security
0:49, published data sources, copy and paste in
0:52dashboards, hallelujah. Tableau exchange,
0:54hire me for tableau public, tableau acceler
0:57ators,
0:57these are essentially dashboard starters.
0:59It's a bit of a rebrand but it's going to
1:01sort of
1:01get a big boost I think in this release.
1:04Replay animation, so see animations again.
1:07Salesforce style color palettes, yes yes,
1:09Salesforce is creeping more and more into
1:11the product.
1:11New formatting capabilities, mobile
1:14improvements, mobile, mobile is one of the
1:16best parts of
1:17tablets, just not used enough and I love
1:19seeing improvements to the mobile
1:20experience because it
1:21means that hopefully in the future these
1:23devices become a prominent way of using
1:26tableau. Let's
1:27carry on. Multi data source support in map
1:29layers, now I really struggle to understand
1:31what this
1:31meant so we'll get into this a little bit
1:33later on and I'll update you. Metrics
1:35improvements,
1:36especially the ability to embed metrics in
1:39the embedded sort of capabilities in table
1:41au. So
1:42instead of embedding a viz you can now
1:43embed metrics, that's super cool. Access
1:46ibility,
1:46this is the second time in a row that
1:48accessibility is getting improvement, so it
1:51's really
1:51something that tableau is focusing on here
1:53which is great. Inherited lineage
1:55descriptions, this is
1:56going to be cool when you're working with
1:58the data catalog and you want those
1:59descriptions to sort of
2:01propagate throughout your data sources.
2:03Tableau bridge multi-pool support, so this
2:05is going to be
2:05interesting. Subscription emails for flow
2:08completion, so essentially the ability to
2:10be told
2:10when the flow has finished. New connectors
2:12in tableau exchange, the tableau exchange
2:14was one
2:15of the biggest announcements in the keynote
2:17and now we're getting the new connectors
2:19starting to
2:19sort of trickle in. Essentially the
2:21marketplace is getting filled up which is
2:23good to see.
2:24Support for Linux RHEL 8.3 plus, this is
2:27for tableau server. Tableau server ATR,
2:30this is
2:31authorization to run. We'll get into this a
2:32little bit later so don't worry too much
2:34about that,
2:34I'll try and explain it the best as I can.
2:37And last but not least offline activation
2:39improvements,
2:39this is going to be again another quality
2:41of life improvement especially those people
2:43who have to
2:44pick up tableau servers in disaster
2:45recovery scenarios. So that's pretty much a
2:48rundown of
2:48all the features. Now I do have to say this
2:51is not always the full list, this is just
2:54simply what
2:54marketing has decided to focus on in this
2:57release. When we actually get the official
2:59release and the
3:00documentation comes out there is always a
3:02list of changes and new features and some
3:05of them are just
3:06so small they don't make it into this sort
3:08of headline set of features. So don't
3:10assume that
3:10this is it, there's a whole load more. In
3:12fact tableau normally put out a slide
3:14showing you all
3:15the features and all the changes on their
3:17own announcement page so look out for that,
3:20it's going
3:20to be something interesting there as well
3:22when this one comes out as well. So that's
3:24a rundown
3:24of all the features, let's get stuck into
3:26these a little bit more. Now before we get
3:29stuck in I just
3:29want to highlight, look you can go and
3:31catch all of the previous versions and all
3:33the previous
3:34releases over on tableautim.com. If you go
3:36to tableautim.com on the home page you'll
3:38see that
3:39the 2021.3 banner is there. If you go to
3:42that you can see I've got 14 videos on 21.3
3:44. If you go to
3:46the playlist page you can see that I
3:47actually have a range of playlists across
3:49different topics.
3:50Look at this image, this image has
3:51disappeared, what the hell is wrong with
3:53that? Websites,
3:53I just can't stay on top of them. But
3:55nonetheless you can see here I have a
3:57playlist on 21.3,
3:58I have one on 21.2, I've been doing these
4:01for quite a while so if you're new to the
4:02channel be
4:03sure to check these out. If you missed
4:05conference I have a bunch of content here
4:06from conference as
4:07well that kind of summarizes it very
4:09quickly but we've also got some live
4:10streams that I did with
4:11Ravi so be sure to check that out. Now if
4:13we go to the release and start to go
4:15through in more
4:16detail, I always like this, this is always
4:18a little bit of fun. So let's start with
4:19virtual
4:20connections. Now when we click on these
4:22tableau is normally very good by giving us
4:24these drop
4:24downs and this is sort of what I rely on to
4:26talk about these features. So virtual
4:28connections,
4:29virtual connections are a new content type
4:31in tableau server and tableau online that
4:33are used
4:34to create and share access to tables.
4:36Essentially you've got the ability to
4:37create a connection
4:38centrally on tableau server and then other
4:40people can use this connection to connect
4:42to data. It's
4:43a pretty sort of straightforward feature. C
4:45inquely embed service account credentials,
4:47define data policies and extract data
4:49centrally. So this is really cool because
4:52when you centrally define connections and
4:54you're doing it within the server sort of
4:57environment,
4:58what you can then expect to be able to do
5:00is to define who can see what essentially.
5:03So
5:04something that I think is also a separate
5:06item here, you can see it here just below
5:08centralized row level security, this is
5:10almost an implicit capability of being able
5:12to do virtual
5:13connections. So the idea is you create a
5:15virtual connections and you democratize
5:17that across the
5:18business and then what you do with
5:19centralized row level security is you put
5:21in security policies to
5:23essentially define what people can or can't
5:25see depending on what part of the
5:26organization they're
5:27in or what groups they're part of and so on
5:29and so forth. So these two features really
5:32come in
5:32unison. There's no real point in doing
5:34virtual connections if you're not then
5:36going to give
5:36people the ability to do row level security
5:39. What I'd love to see in the future is
5:41column level
5:42security. So not just being able to say hey
5:44these rows are available to these people
5:46but even pulling
5:47out metrics and removing them for certain
5:49users that would make some dashboards so
5:51much easier to
5:52build especially in fast moving consumer
5:54goods environments where some business
5:56units can see
5:57certain metrics. Let's say finance can
5:59sometimes see finance metrics but sales
6:01people can't
6:02necessarily see the full data that's
6:03sometimes a requirement in some
6:05organizations. So I can't wait
6:06to see where that goes but as always this
6:08is the first release so let's look forward
6:10to see what
6:10Tableau does with this over in the future.
6:12Okay if we go back up to the top we've got
6:14connected apps.
6:15Now connected apps is sort of a difficult
6:17one to understand it can kind of sounds
6:18like an app store
6:19has been launched or something sort of
6:20weird is out there. Well essentially the
6:22way to think of
6:23this is Tableau's rebuilt the way it
6:25handles connections from other applications
6:27. Other
6:28applications can essentially be built by
6:30developers. Let's say you're building a web
6:32portal and you'd like to embed Tableau
6:34visas inside of your portal. Well in order
6:36to do that
6:37you need to be able to authenticate with
6:39Tableau and in order to authenticate with
6:41Tableau you need
6:41to develop some form of trust and that
6:44trust can essentially be a handshake in the
6:45Tableau. Well
6:46this has essentially been called trusted
6:48tickets in other parlences you might have
6:50heard of things
6:51like single sign-on and that being another
6:53de facto way of handling trust between two
6:55applications.
6:56Essentially what Tableau has done is they
6:58've made the Tableau server and Tableau
7:00online setup
7:01more in line with what happens across web
7:03technology today. So this is going to make
7:06it
7:06much easier to create an application and
7:08have it talk to Tableau in a way that
7:10persists that is
7:11easy to use and manage and this I think
7:13will enable new things in the future. So if
7:15you think
7:16of things like the Tableau exchange it's
7:17kind of important to have this because as
7:19people start to
7:20integrate more and more into Tableau these
7:22are the kind of connections you're going to
7:23want them to
7:24be able to create. So I'm not a techie I
7:26don't fully understand the full benefits of
7:29this I'd
7:30encourage you to maybe go watch a developer
7:32session I'll try and find some if I can. I
7:35don't
7:35think there has been anything publicly yet
7:36although there might have been something at
7:38conference if there has been I'll put it in
7:40the description below be sure to check that
7:42out.
7:42Next up we have Slack now Tableau keeps
7:45making this feature even better of course
7:48we've had
7:49Dreamforce and Tableau conference talk
7:51heavily about Slack first analytics. What
7:53we've got in
7:53this release is the ability to share a viz
7:56from our Stata to Slack so it's not quite
7:58both ways
7:59yet you still can't use our Stata in Slack
8:01that was sort of touted to come out at some
8:03point next
8:04year but in essence this is the first step
8:06so we're going to get incremental steps
8:07here to try
8:08and make this feature better and it's good
8:10to see sort of Tableau stick into that
8:11roadmap there so
8:13that's pretty straightforward. We've talked
8:15about row level security that's a pretty
8:16straightforward
8:17one I think that's going to make it easier
8:19the row level security paper by Tableau is
8:21one that
8:22you have to kind of go through to
8:23understand all the different ways you can
8:24do this every time you
8:25come across a solution it's just a standard
8:27thing again I'll try and put that in the
8:29description
8:30below I'm going to have so many resources
8:31in these descriptions so bear with me as I
8:34get those all in
8:34there but nonetheless definitely check out
8:36that wire paper to understand why this is
8:38actually
8:38going to be a great feature. Edit publish
8:41data sources now what is cool about this is
8:43I believe
8:44you can rename and edit a publish data
8:45source from the web authoring interface so
8:48here we go
8:48manage data sources on the web just got
8:50easier so that's the key thing here not in
8:53desktop on the
8:54web so you have to go onto Tableau online
8:56or Tableau server in order to get this
8:58benefit say
8:58goodbye to downloading publish data sources
9:01to desktop to make your changes you can now
9:02edit
9:03publish data source directly in Tableau
9:05server and Tableau online test your changes
9:07and publish all
9:08without leaving the browser and then those
9:10changes essentially propagate down all the
9:11way down to
9:12your workbooks including being able to
9:14rename the connection so that's kind of
9:15useful it's going to
9:16make a lot of workflows a little bit faster
9:18sometimes what you had to do is you'd find
9:20a
9:20problem in the publish data source you'd
9:22have to open a workbook pull the data
9:24source down republish
9:26it back up and if you've forgotten the
9:27credentials you'd have to sort of make a
9:29local copy create a
9:30published data source again it's just such
9:32a mess so this is going to make things a
9:34lot lot easier.
9:35The next one I can't believe we're really
9:38celebrating this you know and it's kind of
9:40funny
9:41it reminds me when Apple brought copy and
9:44paste to the iPhone in like version 3 and
9:47it was just
9:47such a euphoric moment for everyone who had
9:49an iPhone because until then you literally
9:52could not
9:52copy and text text in a message if you can
9:54't remember that then you're probably too
9:56young to be
9:57know about this this was even a thing but
9:59it took Apple like two to three years to
10:02bring copy and
10:02paste to the iPhone apparently it was a
10:04really difficult challenge nonetheless here
10:06we go Tableau
10:07sort of doing the same thing copy and paste
10:10and dashboards now I've got to be honest I
10:13have mixed
10:14feelings about this yes this is going to be
10:16a great workflow benefit if you've got a
10:18button
10:18and you want to create a duplicate go ahead
10:21do it now what is not 100 clear is that
10:24what exactly
10:26what are the parameters where this is going
10:28to stop it does say here easily copy and
10:30duplicate
10:30images text boxes web containers web page
10:33containers within the same and across
10:36different
10:36dashboards and work with in Tableau online
10:38and Tableau server and Tableau desktop okay
10:42so that
10:42doesn't include buttons that doesn't
10:44include uh vises and charts so this is
10:46going to be one of
10:47those things where you kind of have a habit
10:49copy and paste you think it works
10:50everywhere
10:51but in actual fact it doesn't and those
10:54particular features like if I wanted to
10:56copy a sheet I'd
10:57right click duplicate so there's another
10:59sort of there's sort of two worlds
11:01appearing here where in
11:02one set of objects you copy and paste and
11:05in another you create duplicates so I'd
11:08really love
11:09for this to be just sort of unified in some
11:11way or form I'd really love things to have
11:13sort of one
11:13unified language so if I copy and paste it
11:15's copy and paste everywhere if I'm on a
11:18dashboard I'd
11:18like to copy a chart and I create a copy
11:20automatically creates a duplicate sheet for
11:23me
11:23and vice versa if I copy a button it
11:25creates a duplicate button for me and not
11:28having to sort of
11:29just work within the sort of confines of
11:32images text boxes and containers um now
11:35what would be
11:35interesting is to know is if the objects in
11:37the containers come along with those
11:39containers I
11:40haven't really had a play with this I'm
11:42deliberately waiting until the thing is out
11:43because these things
11:45do change sometimes in the beta process I
11:46know there's been a lot of twitter posts
11:48about this
11:48it's basically gone viral before the
11:50release but nonetheless it'll be good to
11:52see how this is
11:53implemented so looking forward to putting
11:55this to the test that's going to be really
11:57really sort of
11:58nice to see the tableau exchange there's
12:00not much to share here other than to say
12:02look the tableau
12:03exchange is pretty much here if I actually
12:05go to another browser window let me open up
12:07another
12:07browser window here and we just search
12:10tableau exchange um I believe this is
12:12already live if I
12:13just go here to extension gallery.tableau.
12:16com this is what they're calling tableau
12:18exchange
12:18so um it's just a rebrand of the tableau um
12:21extension gallery but now they've given it
12:24a
12:24home to include extensions connectors and
12:27accelerators so this is pretty much live
12:29already
12:29you can go check this out no need to wait
12:31for the release and this is going to be
12:33interesting the
12:34great thing is it has some compatibility
12:36going back to 2018 1.2 all the way to 2019.
12:403 so essentially
12:41these versions are going to have support
12:44there is a bunch of versions here so 2020.3
12:46and 2020.2
12:48and I think 2020.4 are all losing support
12:51basically have lost support this month so
12:54be sure
12:54to sort of check your upgrade process for
12:57those things due to security issue and post
12:59gres but
12:59nonetheless everything is available here
13:01and you're going to be able to sort of just
13:03browse this so
13:03I probably should just do a whole separate
13:06video on dashboard extensions connectors
13:08and accelerators
13:09and really just sort of take every single
13:11one of them for a spin maybe these are
13:12better as a live
13:13stream try and see how many of them I can
13:15get through in a single live stream and
13:17just sort of
13:18get dig into them how easy are they are
13:20their prices all those questions if you've
13:22got
13:22interesting questions you'd love to know
13:24about these let me know and we sort of take
13:26them for
13:26a spin at some point soon okay if I go back
13:29um the the thing I should also add about
13:32the exchange is
13:33I think it also deserves its own video
13:35because um it's a real step change in the
13:38way tableau thinks
13:39tableau talked a lot about the higher the
13:42economy the tableau economy so this is
13:44going to be a
13:44fundamental part think of this as the app
13:47store for tableau and the developer program
13:50is basically
13:51going to be what's driving all of this so
13:53the economy is the people around it
13:54essentially the
13:55developers the exchange is the platform and
13:58everything else needs to be sort of formed
14:01over
14:01the next few years to really make this a
14:03thing for now it's just a web page that's
14:05been rebranded
14:07if I go to the hire me button this is
14:08really really cool and I love this feature
14:10because
14:10Priya is actually a colleague of mine at
14:12the information lab um she definitely does
14:14need
14:14hiring at least not yet but um look at look
14:16at our profile she's got an amazing sort of
14:19tableau
14:19public profile you can google priya padam
14:21and you'll find it um on google quite
14:23easily but
14:24nonetheless in linkedin sorry not in linked
14:27in this should be on linkedin but on tableau
14:30public you've
14:30now got a hire me button to let people know
14:32that you're available for hire so people
14:34can actually
14:35send you a message directly and I believe
14:37this goes to your email so this is going to
14:39be really
14:40really nice and people can get in touch
14:41with you and say hey are you available to
14:43work this is
14:44great because it really starts to make the
14:46tableau public profiles the centerpiece for
14:49the economy
14:49essentially all the effort that we've
14:51invested over the years on our tablet
14:53public profiles
14:54is certainly going to sort of come to use
14:56now I'm in a bit of a sticky situation
14:58because I have not
14:59published anything to public in ages it's
15:02just something I just haven't had time and
15:04to be honest
15:05the passion to really get involved with I
15:07've really struggled with stuff like tableau
15:08public
15:09I'm a consultant I build stuff for clients
15:11I like to solve problems hands-on I'm not
15:14so creative
15:14when it comes to sort of making these
15:16amazing visits that really push the
15:18creative boundaries
15:19of tableau to the very edge so I just I
15:21just does it sort of just doesn't come to
15:23me naturally as
15:24wanting to do that unless I'm passionate
15:26about it so quantified stuff from formula
15:28one and those are
15:28the things I'm going to start doing more of
15:30in the future because there's a pretty much
15:32the only data
15:32sets that I really sort of get excited
15:34about if that makes sense if I go to the
15:36next item here
15:37this is tableau accelerators again these
15:39are part of the exchange so it's kind of
15:41like two
15:42announcements in one here these are
15:43dashboard starters essentially templates
15:46that you can put
15:46into your particular organization and just
15:49have something to go right out of the game
15:51this was
15:52actually made possible via a purchase of a
15:55company called lintao again I can never
15:58remember this name
15:59so salesforce acquires um salesforce acqu
16:03ires a lot of things so this does not help
16:07um so you can
16:08see I've googled it in the past here lintao
16:10sa there you go I don't know I don't even
16:13know how
16:13to say that if you know how to say this
16:15properly let me know but no we're thrilled
16:17salesforce has
16:17acquired lintao sa a global tableau partner
16:20based in switzerland that delivers
16:22analytics
16:22and dashboard templates and consuming
16:24expertise and consulting expertise in
16:26dashboard design so
16:27lintao business they basically make
16:30templates I don't know if there's a link to
16:32lintao website
16:33here there probably isn't so if I just go
16:36and grab this link maybe the website has
16:38been sunset no
16:40it's still there it's still there so um I'm
16:43surprised this is still here um essentially
16:46so
16:46maybe they're they're keeping this up as
16:48the consulting sort of aspect of the sales
16:50force
16:51acquisition of these guys but essentially
16:52if you're looking for a dashboard these
16:54guys have
16:54built templates in lots of these sectors
16:56ready to go and what tableau have done is
16:58they've essentially
16:59brought these over and they've turned them
17:01into what they call dashboard starters and
17:03have now
17:04rebranded to dashboard accelerators so this
17:06is basically what this is so you can go
17:09over here
17:10to the accelerators tab from the tableau
17:11exchange and you have them pretty much
17:13ready to go so if I
17:14click at this one opportunity view you'll
17:16see there's a dashboard ready to go which
17:18shows the
17:18opportunity wins and losses and it's a very
17:21basic starting point but for companies who
17:23have zero this
17:24is a great starting point and the other
17:25thing is these come with data sources in
17:27there and then
17:28what you've also got are partners of choice
17:30so these are essentially partners that are
17:32going to
17:33be able to sort of help you deal with this
17:35so I don't know how sort of that list has
17:36been brought
17:37by I'm a bit sad not to see the information
17:39lab in all of these but nonetheless um if
17:41you want to
17:42check us out be sure to check us out I'm
17:44certain we could kick out on pretty much
17:46all of these
17:46templates so uh be in touch let us know
17:48more and we're more than happy to help but
17:51nonetheless if
17:52I sort of keep on on my march of the new
17:54features accelerators here they're
17:56essentially templates
17:58check them out once they're available re
18:00playing animations this is a pretty obvious
18:02one and you
18:03see an animation you kind of see it play
18:05through and they've now got a new icon that
18:07lets you sort
18:08of replay them so that's a pretty
18:09straightforward one there's not much to
18:11sort of celebrate there
18:12salesforce palette oh god you know sales
18:15force is slowly creeping into tableau you
18:17know it's it's
18:18it's slowly happening and this to me feels
18:20like a totally unnecessary change you could
18:23have just
18:24shipped us all tps files um in fact that's
18:26probably all that's happening they've
18:28changed
18:28the tps file in the base install of tableau
18:31and they've called it a feature you could
18:33have done
18:33this without this it's sort of not
18:35necessary I could have sent you a file with
18:36all these features
18:37in fact if you've got an old version of
18:39tableau I can send you the tps file so you
18:42have this feature
18:43too it's not something that's exclusive to
18:45this particular version but nonetheless
18:48here they are
18:48you can use the salesforce colors I think
18:50this is so that your dashboards can look
18:52and feel a bit
18:53like salesforce right so you can build dash
18:55boards that sort of blend into the sales
18:57force environment
18:58so that's um that's going to be useful to
19:00know and new formatting capabilities
19:02improvements to
19:03the web essentially so choose from a
19:05variety of number and date formatting
19:07options for parameters
19:08on tableau online and tableau server
19:11essentially web edit looks like it's
19:12getting a bit more beefed
19:13up so the formatting capabilities for
19:15parameters is going up for date fields use
19:18any common date
19:19and time format or quickly customize it
19:21according to your company standards so
19:23formatting slowly creeping in essentially
19:26web edit is catching up to the desktop
19:28version I keep saying
19:29that this will be the year every year
19:31hopefully this is actually the year
19:33improvements to mobile
19:34I find the data you need faster with
19:36collections and shared with me now
19:38available in tableau
19:39mobile so this is a nice sort of catch-up
19:42mechanic here so tableau mobile didn't have
19:44collections and
19:45shared with me this is now a section that's
19:47available so that's pretty pretty
19:48straightforward
19:49we'll actually be able to play with this
19:51once the app gets updated multiple data
19:53source support in
19:55map layers so this is really cool let me
19:58just read through this so I can try and
20:00make sure I've
20:01understood this correctly the capability of
20:02adding an unlimited number of layers to
20:04your map
20:05visualization got more powerful with
20:07support for multi-data sources and map
20:09players you can now
20:10analyze more data in the context of one
20:12another for example you can build a map
20:14that shows your
20:15retail stores location accessibility
20:17population and revenue all coming from
20:19different data sources
20:21so this is super cool because previously
20:24what you had to do is get all of that data
20:27into one
20:27data source using either the data model or
20:30whatever other sort of mechanism you wanted
20:32to use
20:33joins or whatever and then once you had
20:35them all in one data source you then had to
20:37use map layers
20:37to sort of get them in on each other with
20:39this one what you can do is you can
20:41essentially bring in
20:42disparate data sets and just create the
20:44mapping assets from them because
20:45essentially the mapping
20:46items don't really need a context because
20:49you know the world is the content the map
20:51is the context so
20:52I'm super interested to see how people hack
20:55this map layers are already pretty you know
20:58virulently hacked so I'm looking forward to
21:01see what creative solutions people come up
21:03with
21:04for building charts with disparate data
21:06sources basically you can take sort of map
21:10map layers to
21:11the next level and just build visual
21:12izations on one sheet essentially with this
21:15capability so that
21:15will be really really interesting to see
21:17how that works and what people do with that
21:19but yeah I'm
21:20fully anticipating the hacks for this
21:22release for this particular feature if you
21:24're using this for
21:25mapping this is going to be a nice quality
21:27of life improvement just makes things that
21:29little bit
21:29easier now if I go to metrics improvements
21:31this is cool the two things have changed
21:34here you can
21:35embed metrics in an embedded platform so
21:37you instead of just embedding a viz you can
21:39actually
21:39just take the metric instead the metrics
21:41are nice because they're consistent they
21:43feel really nice
21:44and because they're designed with the sort
21:46of big ass numbers and a sort of a spark
21:49line they look
21:49really nice and they look sort of
21:51standardized and this is one of those
21:52things where we're not
21:53building the charts it's actually being
21:55done for you so you build a dashboard
21:57create a bunch of
21:58metrics from it you could even create a
21:59dashboard purposely for the benefit of
22:01metrics and then once
22:03you've done that you go take all these
22:04metrics and you put them in an embedded
22:06platform just as
22:07a bunch of metrics and when people click on
22:09them they go to the relevant viz super cool
22:11right so
22:12that's now a feature that's going to be
22:14available in 21.4 the other thing is you
22:16can now do status
22:17indicators and targets inside of this as
22:20well so you can say look this is the target
22:22this is the
22:22value and when it's above do red and when
22:25it's below do green okay you might choose
22:27blue and
22:28orange instead of those colors but
22:29nonetheless that's going to be a nice
22:31quality of life
22:31improvement and so i'm looking forward to
22:34seeing that when it lands i've also made
22:36some assumptions
22:37there that you can change the color but
22:38again we have to wait and see these and
22:40when they come out
22:41accessibility is always important at table
22:43au more improvements for keyboard and screen
22:45reader
22:45accessibility on tablo server and tab
22:47online you can easily walk headers you can
22:50easily walk
22:51headers to select and access them to view
22:53data you can also hear verbal descriptions
22:56of all the member
22:56names of the field so slowly adding this in
22:59i it's one of those things i have to use it
23:01to really
23:01understand what's going on here if you've
23:03never done it give yourself the challenge
23:05of getting to
23:06a dashboard without using your mouse
23:08essentially and all you can use are the um
23:11keyboard essentially
23:13and you can even give yourself the added
23:15challenge of going on the tableau landing
23:17page closing your
23:18eyes and only using your keyboard to
23:20navigate to the various things in order to
23:22do that you have
23:23to understand the accessibility
23:25capabilities of your laptop so be sure to
23:27do that beforehand
23:28and then go from there it's a really really
23:30tough challenge a colleague a colleague of
23:32mine colin
23:32smith at the information lab he made us all
23:34do this and it really made me realize the
23:36challenges
23:37and the accessibility poses to individuals
23:40who have accessibility requirements and for
23:43the record
23:43whenever you have accessibility
23:44improvements it doesn't just best benefit
23:46people with accessibility
23:48needs it benefits everyone because everyone
23:50to some extent does benefit from
23:51accessibility needs
23:52whether it's making text bigger clearer
23:55improving contrast all of these things make
23:57using these
23:58products a better experience so these
24:00improvements are always good for everyone
24:02not just for people
24:03with accessibility needs if i go to the
24:06next feature inherited lineage descriptions
24:09um with
24:10this one essentially ensure that column
24:12level descriptions from data sources and
24:15workbooks
24:15are shared downstream so essentially you
24:17can type up descriptions in the catalog and
24:20then downstream
24:21at least on web edit these are picked up i
24:23believe that it's only in web edit though
24:25everywhere the
24:26data source will work because you use the
24:28descriptions will be consistent this also
24:30enabled descriptions editing at a single
24:32source so i'll have to test if these
24:34descriptions sort
24:35of propagate down to desktop i think they
24:38're only available in web edit and in the
24:40sort of
24:41metadata context of tabla online and tablo
24:44server but i might be wrong with that let's
24:46wait till that
24:46ships to find out tablo bridge multi-pool
24:50so this is essentially the concept of
24:53having multiple
24:54tablo bridge clients running and with but
24:57with bridge multi-pool it's a bit of a
24:59tongue twister
25:00i keep not being able to say that you can
25:02achieve multi-network connectivity with
25:04online schedules
25:06multi-pool supports bridge pools for each
25:08network so even the largest enterprise
25:10organization can
25:11see and understand their private network
25:13data in tablo online so basically i think
25:16this is a
25:16high level view of all the different tablo
25:19online clients you've got running and being
25:21able to pull
25:22them all up to do specific jobs again i'll
25:25be interested to try and see how this
25:27really works
25:28if you've used tablo bridge and i'd love to
25:31see sort of if you know where this might be
25:33of use
25:34and the only use case i can think of is
25:36when you have large organizers and i'm
25:39talking really large
25:40organizations running tablo online in lots
25:43of different places and you essentially
25:46need to be
25:47able to run tablo bridge in lots of
25:49different places to keep up with all of
25:51those requirements
25:52and by using a pool of machines to do this
25:55you can then sort of orchestrate each of
25:57these pools in a
25:58more sort of organized way rather than just
26:01you know relying on one machine to have to
26:03do everything
26:04so it might make things like extract refres
26:06hes and schedules a little bit more
26:08manageable because
26:09you've got a central hub for managing all
26:11these queries that are running so
26:13essentially this is
26:14going to allow this to be distributed
26:16across a bunch of machines essentially if i
26:19go to the next
26:20one subscription emails for flow completion
26:22so essentially i believe when this flow
26:24finishes
26:24you'll get an email say look this flow
26:27completed i'm hoping you can also have
26:30notifications when
26:31they don't finish i think that's the one i
26:32'll be switching on but it's good to know
26:34maybe you're
26:34depending on the flow to do something and
26:37that's going to be great and and one of the
26:40things i'd
26:40also love is i would love this flow
26:44subscription to trigger an email
26:46subscription so the same way
26:48we have link tasks and tablo prep i'd love
26:51for when this flow completion runs i'd love
26:55to then
26:55be able to trigger a subscription email for
26:58a dashboard because of course at that point
27:00the
27:00subscription's up to date and that's the
27:02best time to send it and it means that you
27:04can have
27:05tasks running when they're necessary rather
27:07than just running on a schedule every hour
27:09for no
27:10reason essentially so that's going to be a
27:12really really sort of nice sort of quality
27:15of life
27:15improvement if it gets added in the future
27:17and we've got new connectors on the tablo
27:19exchange
27:19so tablo are adding more connectors in this
27:22sort of space so the 25 connectors
27:25including a new one
27:26for salesforce marketing cloud zendesk
27:29service now sap hana and essentially what i
27:31think is happening
27:32here is they're reaching out to their
27:33partners and they're telling them build the
27:35connectors for
27:35tablo put them in our marketplace and let
27:38people start connecting to your data which
27:40is a good way
27:41to do it i think um it's pretty useful now
27:42these next few i need to double check my
27:44sources because
27:45i'm not okay with all these terms i don't
27:47even know what rhel 8.3 means if you do
27:50know um let
27:52me know i think this is a version of linux
27:54okay so let's let's go let's just google
27:57this let's
27:57just do the dumb thing which is um it's not
27:59the dumb thing it's actually the most
28:01intelligent
28:01thing so red hat uh enterprise linux rhel
28:05that's what that means okay we now know
28:08what that is so
28:09essentially this is a flavor of linux and
28:12they're specifically supporting version 8.3
28:15uh onwards
28:17essentially so in tablo 2004 tablo now
28:20supports deployments on linux uh red hat
28:23enterprise linux
28:258.3 plus so what i'm interested in what are
28:28the other versions because it says plus um
28:32let's
28:32agree and just accept these but uh let's go
28:35to red hat enterprise linux oh so there's
28:39actually
28:39a version 9 so there must have something
28:42something must have changed in 8.3 that was
28:45fundamental and
28:46now you can pretty much run 8.4 8.5 and 9
28:50is currently in beta and the reason this is
28:53good
28:53is because typically you want to stay up to
28:55date with these releases because the
28:57releases tend to
28:58patch security fixes so if you're not been
29:01able to update beyond 8.2 let's say
29:03assuming that's
29:04what tablo supported before or maybe never
29:07supported um from 8.3 plus you're going to
29:10be
29:10able to sort of um get the updates going at
29:12least for your operating system it's one of
29:14those things
29:14you just have to check you never know if
29:16upgrading your operating system it's going
29:18to break tablo
29:18and at least i think for that and that's
29:20going to be useful for people to know next
29:23one is server
29:24authorization to run server atr now enabled
29:27by default server authorization to run um
29:30atr product
29:31activation makes licensing tablo server in
29:34cloud container or virtual environment
29:37deployment easier
29:38by removing the need to refresh or de
29:40activate keys and removing or reducing
29:42maximum activation errors
29:44so i get what this feature does i'd love to
29:47know the mechanics of how it does that um
29:50so again when
29:51the documentation comes out we'll have a
29:53dive we'll have a look at it and we'll try
29:55and sort of get
29:56those um out and explained offline
29:58activation improvements and for air gaps
30:01tablo server
30:02deployments benefit benefit from the
30:04removal of a single pass activation for the
30:06first license the
30:07clear error message and improved file
30:10naming clearer error messages and improved
30:13file naming so
30:14again i i i i haven't worked with air gaps
30:18tablo servers enough um to really
30:22understand the impact
30:24of this typically most tablo servers i've
30:25installed have had some sort of internet
30:27connection so i've
30:28always been able to rely on the activation
30:31methods that's sort of publicly available
30:33and so i'd love
30:34to know if you've used an air gap server i
30:36'd love to know what are the challenges and
30:38why does this
30:39feature make life easier and when the
30:40documentation comes out this might become
30:43more apparent as well
30:44so yeah that's pretty much all the features
30:46boy it's a it's a weird list and it's a
30:48real sort of
30:49hodgepodge of features but i think they're
30:51all sort of cute and small and it's
30:53definitely not
30:54a quiet release i think there's a lot in
30:56here that everyone is going to like it's
30:58not one of
30:58those big hitter releases with something
31:01like the data model in there um but it's
31:02definitely a nice
31:03set of features to close out the year so
31:05that's pretty much the video if you've made
31:07it this far
31:07thank you so much really appreciate it and
31:09when i make these long videos they're a
31:11real slog and
31:13i know that some of you do actually make it
31:14to the end typically 10 to 20 percent of
31:17you so i really
31:17really appreciate it um you're exactly the
31:19kind of person i'm actually interested in
31:21getting some
31:22feedback on because essentially i'm going
31:25to be doing a review of tableau the whole
31:27entire year's
31:28release of stuff essentially i'm fed up
31:30with the way that gartner mess up the
31:32reviews for all these
31:33br products so the only real way you can
31:35try and change that is to do a better
31:36review of the product
31:38itself so imagine a review done by someone
31:40who only uses one product it's probably not
31:42that
31:42useful but we can critique a bunch of
31:44things that we didn't see that we'd like to
31:46see and a bunch of
31:47things we want to see that we did see so if
31:49you know what those features are if you'd
31:51love to see
31:52a review let me know what you'd be
31:53interested to see in the review itself in
31:55the comments below
31:56i'm really really keen to hear more the
31:58other thing is this friday i'm going to be
32:00making a
32:00video about 2022 essentially next year on
32:04this channel i've got lots and lots of
32:06stuff to change
32:07and we have grown incredibly fast we've
32:09gone from basically zero and sort of table
32:12au related
32:13subscribers three years ago i started on
32:15about 800 just making these you know weird
32:18videos about
32:18layout containers and so on and so forth i
32:20didn't really do anything i started at less
32:22than 800
32:23and we're now at 21 000 as we are today
32:26which is crazy in the space of three years
32:28i really believe
32:29that there are more people out there that
32:31could benefit from understanding more about
32:33tableau
32:34but in general understanding more about
32:36analytics essentially tableau is not the
32:38only product that
32:39i know everyone uses people use excel
32:41people use altrix just did a survey a few
32:44weeks ago and it
32:45closed out with altrix being the top
32:47product that people want to know more about
32:49so that's going to
32:49be something that we're going to be
32:51exploring as well so on friday i'm going to
32:52go into all of this
32:53in detail so depending on when this video
32:55comes out it better come out on thursday or
32:57wednesday
32:58otherwise me saying this is going to make
33:00no sense but nonetheless thank you for
33:02staying to the end
33:03i'd really love to know your feedback let
33:05me know in the comments below and check out
33:06the video on
33:07friday because you're going to be the
33:08absolutely perfect audience for that if you
33:10've made it this
33:11far thanks for watching i'll catch you in
33:13the next video
